So I thought I took a photo of before but whenever I mix my salt it leaves behind large and plentiful sediment and dirt colored particles. I know this has been discussed before. Is there a way to avoid this? What causes this? I only mix it for a few days and use it within a week.

What salt brand are you using? I used to use Reef Crystals years ago and had some similar dirty looking residue every time after making a fresh batch of saltwater. I believe the residue was caused by added organics in the salt from the manufacturer.

Fritz Reef Pro but also I’ve heard aquarium salt is inconsistent and a byproduct of mining. So in some ways that makes sense but you only see it after it mixes/is what was inside that pearly white salt. And I’ve tried other brands and they all do it.

Nyos and ESV don’t.

Almost all of them do it if you let them mix for a few days. Sometimes it’s a manganese/iron precipitation. Other times it might be calcium carbonate.

The cheaper salts do it much more than the higher quality salts. It’s usually not an issue and just a chore to clean
