My first wrasse ever was doing good first few weeks and last week seen he had spinal injury. Was doing barrel rolls and standing on its tail and swimming around and laying upside down. And today I see him getting eaten alive by hermits :( rip

Anything I can do in the future if I get a wrasse and has same injury? I hear they’re not common so I guess I’m unlucky :(

How should I do it? Also idk if it’s dead or not now

I’d just snip its head off with some kitchen shears since it’s barely moving. Painless.

It’s hard to know what happened, could have been caused by anything. Unfortunately, sometimes fish just don’t last once they get introduced.

I think there has been a trend of some wrasse (not sure which) that have been having these symptoms & death?

@Jay Hemdal (do I remenber this correctly ?)
Ya I found it and am reading now , it’s UNWD (unknown neurological wrasse disease) and more common in fairy and flasher wrasse , mine was a fairy :/

Scared to buy wrasse now

Thank you yes I was reading up on this thread last night and I’m pretty sure this is what killed my wrasse as it was still swimming and trying to eat while looking injured and laying on floor in a C shape

Honestly, over this side of the pond UNWD is uncommon in most species.
Do you have any other fish in the tank? If so what species?

The appearance of that Lubbocki is more so as if it’s been bullied and ran into a rock/lid resulting in a spinal injury.

Sorry - I didn't see your post about the Gramma, just your reply to me about the UNWD. There is certainly something else going on in the tank, these other fish don't develop UNWD.

The gramma dying with its mouth open is distinctive - either gill disease or low dissolved oxygen levels. Are these fish showing any symptoms prior to their death? Does the tank have good aeration (not just circulation)?

Jay

The gramma was hiding for a week before death, the clown looked like it had brook, (whole slime hanging off its body, & im not sure about blenny. These fish also died after I added a skimmer but I’m thinking that’s just coincidence? & no extra aeration
