I have probably a dozen shells littering the sand and still had crabs eating one of my turbos. I'm thinking it died or got stuck on it's back and I didn't see it in time to flip it before the crabs found it.

That’s possible. I haven’t seen any of my turbos attacked. But have seen some others. I think cuc is something you just hurt to accept that will need to be replenished occasionally. At least, that’s how I think about it.
