Walking away meaning in absence to come back and see fish shredded. A couple days is sufficient and I often state a few days, based on observations and fish after two days as advised was released and went back to it, confirming why you dont let them have at it.
We dont wait for fish to get pinned constantly to determine it’s a good time to remove it.
IME, never once, did putting an aggressor in a box have any effect on the aggression. The aggressor, when let out simply asserted themselves and their past position on the new comer.

IMM, only time allows the “resetting” of a heirarchy and there are a number of other methods which can be employed in sequence to hopefully provide a “window” of opportunity to allow this to happen, without pulling any fish.

While I would not allow a fish to kill another, I do let them decide, what the ranking will be.

In my setup, the yellow is at the bottom of the tang hierarchy, which in this case, is the exact opposite.

Then again, that’s just my way of doing things as wrong as it may be.

The yellow is ticked that he is in the box that’s for sure but when the majestic was in the box the yellow never went up to him or showed any aggression but once I let him out the tang was tail flapping him in a corner. Wasn’t attacking him or anything just maybe showing who the boss is but I just don’t trust it with such an expensive fish. The yellow did the same thing to the trigger but stopped after about 2 days but that’s also a trigger and very different than an angel. Since putting the tang in the box the majestic is swimming around and he was eating live brine shrimp yesterday and today.
Again, the display is not unusual at all. This is how order is set, but can be a bit uncomfortable for the reefer.

I’d be ticked as well if you put me in a box. You interfered with the hierarchy IMM.

If no damage at all (no contact) is being done, I just wait it out and reassess every hour.

First hit with damage is a pull out, otherwise let them finish the order.

When it settles, you’ll see that fast.

Theres a reason for an acclimation box and I use them without fail. Many use them with good results. They are not inhumane nor cause field issues. Thats your opinion and . Try having 6 yellows that cohabitate well as in my case and others with multiple yellows. You are in essence advising another to let them hash it out while he is concerned about his majestic as I would be also.

where does my post say we don’t use boxes?
Where do I say they cause any issues?

What I have said is there will come a point where the box is removed. Then we can try mirrors, lights, scape rearranging, but mostly at this point, they either work it out or die. IME, this usually happens in 1 or 2 days, otherwise there an issue.

Flashing is a guarantee on any tang addition.
It’s not something we should fear.
That’s simply part of a process that must take place. IMG_0170.jpeg

Would it make a difference if I put him In my sump for a day or two instead of in the acclimation box? My sump is plenty big enough

Yeah I’m gonna have to do something cause I also ordered a majestic angel about the same size as them but it got back ordered and should be here Tuesday. Guess I should put him in the sump for a couple days
Thats not a good combo.Especially equal sizes(assuming not small juvies)Now you have me worried about the majestic in this fray.Rule of thumb is if you want to keep semi compatibles you need a large tank where each can stake out a safe place.

I’m having the same issue with my newly added sargassum trigger that I just added in last night. He doesn’t look well at all, he just lays on the sand and don’t move. The yellow tang has been hitting it with the tale and he just continues to lay down. What should I do? I had him in the sump but he was doing the same thing just laying. I’m concerned that if I put him back in the dump he will just die. I’m looking for the best option. I was gong to start a new thread but this is a recent one and it’s a similar situation.

Yeah yellow tangs are a pain when it comes to adding new fish and I learned that quick! See if you can catch the tang and put him in an acclimation box for a few days. The tang doesn’t mess with my trigger anymore but my trigger stays at the top front middle of the tank most the time still but swims around sometimes but he still eats like a pig and is doing way better and if the tang comes up to him he puts him in his place real quick so it just takes time for them to figure each other out. Mine never laid on the sand though so that’s def not a good sign.

Get the tang out.
That trigger is stressed from aggression and has no place it can wedge itself without the tang chasing it out so it’s sat on the sand trying to wedge itself in between those two corals the open.

The tang is super fast and and I have a lot of rock work and coral. It would be impossible to get out and it’s too large for a trap and it’s skittish as well. Just, fyi, I purchased the trigger and the salinity level was very low. I acclimated it for about an hour, so you think it may be stressed because of the higher salt?

Was he swimming around where you got him from or did you purchase him online?

i mean going str8 from 1.015 to 1.025 is a most likely a death sentence i would be surprised if this fish survives but hope he does

He was swimming fine at the LFS and eating well.. I also purchased a couple of other smaller fish (anthias, gobby and a wrasse) and they are doing fine, at the sample salinity ..
