I just got these lights and so far they are great but the only complaint I have is the fan it is annoyingly loud. I wonder if I disconnected it will be or a way to hack into it and ramp it down to like 50% since I am only running the light at 40% on my little 30 gallon tank. The fan just runs at full speed whether the light is at 40% or 100%.

Mine are V3 how is it different from V1?

Oh wow didn’t realize there was a v3 now, mine are V2 , fans always on, V1 fans only come on at certain temp and the speed is based off of the temp, mine never came on if they are low.

My fans come on about 5 minutes after the sunup cycle starts but I hardly notice them. I have to be paying attention to hear them and I have 7 running in the room. So far, the few corals I have under them are growing and coloring up nicely.

I have V1 and V2 and mine are all (virtually) silent. I would check the fan guards on yours and make sure they are aligned correctly. One of my units had some fan noise at first. I just backed out the fan guard screws a little, repositioned the guard and tightened it up and it was quiet like the other lights then.

Just to add to this, multiple people have reported their fan guard screws being too tight in general and if you give them a half turn back or so, the noise goes away.

I have actually taken the fan guard off and although better still noisy. I guess I have to make a decision to just live with it. My tank is dead silent so the fan is very noticeable.

My Sicce DC9 is loud as hell overall and there's a water trickle noise in my sump, so the fans aren't really noticeable lol

G6???

Can you post pics of the box? I was not aware there was a G6 model.
Are you sure you don't have a Aquastar G5?

What light did you send back?

Hi, here is the box it looks a lot like the Smatfarms but has the G6 on it. I speculate it is the same manufacturer and this is a newer gen light.

It's definitely a different light. I'm not sure I would call it an upgrade without knowing more about it though.
This light is only 5 channels, vs 6 channels on the original Smat Farm G5.
This light is lacking the green channel completely. So it will not have the same spectrum of a Smat Farm G5, which had very good spectrum.
This light says it has 34 emitters per Amazon, but does not tell you how many of each...
hard to get an idea of the spectrum when they don't give you any of that info.
Is it in the info in the box? if it is, please post it.
It looks like it has 20 emitters under standard black box (90 degree?) lenses and then a single puck, so guessing 14 emitters in the puck array? The original Smat Farm G5 had 24 emitters in 2 puck arrays, so 12 emitters in each array.
So it does not sound like the LED arrays are the same either.

The original Smat Farm G5 had 2 side by side LED arrays, each under its own dimpled fresnel lens and it had phenomenal spread and blending because of this. This new light sports a single LED puck array in the middle, under what looks like a similar dimpled fresnel, but then it's surrounded by 4 more arrays with standard 90 degree black box type lenses... So the spread on this thing is going to be completely different than the original Smat Farm, and I'm guessing is nowhere near as good in spread and light blending as the original Smat Farm G5.

it's definitely a different light altogether, I would not consider this a new Gen of the Smat Farm G5 though.

The shimmer will definitely not be the same either... Disco due to lack of blending

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
