Hey all,
My tank is really starting to grow diatoms, at least i think that’s what they are. Besides Turing my light off I am thinking of getting a cleaning crew but I have no real clue where to start. I’ve seen packages online but I’m unsure what can even be mixed together, water params, what...
Seen a lot online about copepods being great for breaking down diatoms if introduced early enough.
I'm keen to give it a go. But do all pods do the desired thing?
I'm in the UK and it looks like there are limited options for getting any pods here. Was considering these...
Hi! I’ve been having this plague for a while and want to come up with a treatment plan, but first I would like to confirm what I’m dealing with so I can act appropriately. I think they are diatoms. Anyone know for sure?

Hey Everyone,
I had to work for a few weeks out of town and my wife was taking care of the new tank while I was away. This is the first time that I have kept corals and was wondering if Diatoms would affect Zoanthids. I have checked with a microscope and can see the ship like shape of the...
Hello all. I have a 20g water box cube that keeps bottoming out phosphates and nitrates, which caused Dino’s. I fought Dino’s (prorocentrum to be exact) for over 10 months. I won, but then the diatoms took over and became out of control. We then moved out of an apartment and into a house so i...
Hey all!
I have had my tank up an running for almost a year now and for the past few months I have had a bad case of what I think to be diatoms or dinos. Both my phosphates and nitrates are a little over 0 (API test, but it's the best I have right now). I recently acquired a TDS meter and the...
I can see them with my eye, but they're tiny. There's thousands of them in my HOB skimmer, and they've done a very good job of cleaning it up for me overnight. They move pretty fast. They took care of my diatom problem in a few days.
I am guessing copepods?
Thank you!
Hi everyone,
So as the title says, I’ve been fighting amphidinium dinos for not exactly sure how long since I had a good amount of snails die before I really got to the root of the problem, but it’s been about 2 weeks of dosing nitrate, phosphate, and silicate along with bacteria, photo, and...
So I've been scouring the internet for answers, and found lots of pictures of people's tanks with seemingly the same problem, but everyone says it's something else. So I'm hoping I can post my specific situation and someone will know what's going on.
So I've had diatoms, my rocks were golden...
Tank is about 6-7 months old had my first Diatom bloom 3-4 months in and it went away. Shortly afterwards water got super cloudy and GHA bloom came overnight. Added a UV filter to my sump and beat the GHA. Now I have Diatoms covering the whole substrate surface... when I first setup the tank I...
Tanks levels good- fish seem happy and corals are growing like crazy!

Hi all! I started up a new tank after finding out I hated my 75 gallon bowfront. The new tank has been set up for about 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure I've got the regular diatom bloom, but I am new to the hobby and want to verify I am not creating a habitat for something worse. See the pics below. Is...
Hello all,
I have a 10g fairly new tank. Worry not everything is cycled of course but I started noticing orange patches here and there on my sand. All levels are within normal ranges so I have no idea what this might be, but then again I still consider myself a beginner and I don’t know much...
Tank has been up about 7 months. Doing great so far.
last few days I noticed what I think is diatoms? On my rock and sand bed. In the beds i blow it away and it does come back. Seems to go away once lights are off and or less off.
Just want to ask before/if becomes problem.
tank seems to be...
I am planing on using a microscope in an attempt to identify the type of dinos that I have. In your experience, for what type of Dinos does Sillicate dosing work?
Hi guys, I've been doing some research on products I might get for my tank, and came across 3 relatively similar products all made by Seachem, and I'm wondering if anyone knows what each of them do specifically, or how they work together.
The main issues with my tank that I'm looking to solve...
I have an algae appear that I need help w ID. It grows in a stringy reddish brown growth pattern. Also it may or may not have air bubbles within the algae . It may be clinging to it from my HOB SKIMMER. My tank is 2 years old. Thx
Hello can anyone help me I’m having bad luck with my mixed reef tank lately, diatom’s and hair algae have started to take over my tank I have removed hair algae manually and done water changes but still keeps coming back , also my black long spine urchin has lost all his spines and keeps ending...
Hi all, I’ve noticed an increase of brown patches on my sand bed. 5 days ago my phosphate was 0.22, today my phosphate is 0.07. Do you think it’s dino’s or diatoms? Not the clearest shot but hopefully you’ll be able to tell?
Howdy! This being my first reef tank, I have been dealing with what looks like diatoms for some time (new tank, 17 weeks since start of cycling). I would estimate it started around 7-8 weeks ago, and has pretty much persisted daily. My question is, how long can I expect to be dealing with this...
hey all, ive had some red/brown spots showing up on my sand, lately its gotten a little worse and I don't really feed a whole lot. I got a test done at my lfs last week and everything was zero, (except nitrate which was like 5ppm or w.e) which can obviously be a problem. ive started to feed on a...
Hello! This is my first post and my first reef tank. my tank is 2-3 months old and I have diatoms all over the tank sand. When I siphoned it during my last WC, it came right back. Most likely it’s just the ugly phase however I’m wondering if there’s any possibility it could be my water. The...
Hey, I’ve had a diatom outbreak recently but fixed it, it was all because of my water. But there were diatoms all over it and I haven’t been able to get them off even with picking them off I cannot get them. And I’m not sure what to do because it has not opened up in a while, I’ve never actually...
