I know I have to get rid of it but I don't want to have to do that for now. So I am aware of the kind of damage they cause but can I grow macro algae in the tank or will he eat/destroy it all

It may eat a few different kinds of macroalgae - calcified algaes (like shaving brush algae, mermaid's fan algae, etc.) would probably be safe though.
