Get threaded, and don't skimp on the price. Lifegard Aquatics makes good quality bulkheads.

Why threaded?
Easier to disassemble of needed and if you ever need to move the tank, you'll probably want to be able to set it on a flat surface once the plumbing is disconnected from the sump.

I do threaded on the nut side, slip on the flange side, but only so I don't need to worry about accidentally loosening the bulkhead if I need to remove the drain pipes.

Think a gate valve is mandatory or would a ball valve work?

If you are looking for PVC Schedule 80 Bulkheads, then I will shamelessly point out our Inland Seas Bulkheads. InlandSeas is our in-house brand. We own these molds and have been manufacturing and using them for years. they are solid PVC and made in the US.
