Hi All - i bought a flame angelfish without doing much research. LFS sold me this 1.5inch for $400. They said its a solar flame angelfish. I dont know much about them, but its very healthy and eating well and i always wanted a flame for my tank. Hope i did not overpay. Let me know your thoughts?

Thank you

Looks like a young normal flame. They go for around 100 bucks. I would say you seriously overpaid.

You said it is 1.5 inch so probably still needs to darken up as they start out like this:

Solar flare is missing pigment like this:

Solar flare will have distinctive blue on them like the pic @MERKEY posted.

The blue rim on the fins will be a gorgeous metallic blue color.

The black dot can vary from fish to fish, but the blue is sure thing if solar flare or not.

a better pic would help, but getting a pic of a small angel is like throwing a rock to the moon by hand.

but looking at your pic, the black on the back fins tells me it is a regular. Better pic would be able to tell for sure.

How local is the store?

I'd personally reach out to them.
This right here, as they may been sold it as one from their supplier and they do not know the difference. This is not a fish seen everyday, so it can happen.

in short, if it doesn’t have the blue, it isn’t a solar.

As much as i want to support my LFS i rarely ever go anymore and have migrated to sponsors here on the forum. Way better and have proven track records, places that quarantine fish and corals (at least the ones i get from), and are genuinely helpful and knowledgeable if you shoot them a pm. Guys ive dealt with are Pieces of the Ocean, Aqua SD, and TCK Corals and all have been amazing to deal with and sell you what you actually paid for. TSM and Marinecollectors seems to be the go to here for high end fish
