Just had a cashier tell me the same thing with my beta fish I bought walking through the nursery told me I needed to hold the beta fish above the RF security scanners while I'm walking out the door because it will kill the fish. I believe she had any aluminum foil hat underneath her wig too and I couldn't tell which way her eyes were looking so I had to look at her nose because if I looked at one and I she would look at me and it would immediately tool the other way so yeah that just happened

Well did you hold it above the RF scanner?

Nope and the fish is still alive and kicking! Although it does look like it might have mutated into the monster from the blue lagoon lol

the electric waves from the scanners "fry" the fishes brain. It can cause the fish to have irregular swimming patterns and in the end, drown itself. This happened with my sisters beta fish and recently to my gold fish. be careful.
