Is this mucas plugs? The store said it likely is from being handled and netted and to give 24 hours in the acclimation box and update tomorrow. What does everyone suggest ?

The #fishmedic team and other knowledgeable members of our community will do our best to help you resolve your questions. Please provide as much of the following as you are able:
  • Brief description of the issue you are observing and answers to the following questions:
    • How long have you had the fish with the condition?
    • Did you quarantine with medication when you first acquired the fish? (If Yes, which medication?)
  • Current water quality measurements
  • Clear photos of the issue taken using WHITE light and/or a short video of any behaviors (post in your response or on YouTube).
If you can help us by providing as much of the above info as possible, it will make diagnosing and providing recommendations for treatment MUCH easier! The Fish Medic team will get back to you as quickly as possible. Had fish 3 hours
He was ordered for me from my LFS which is a very nice facility. They told me he’s been quarantined and they would feel comfortable introducing him into their own system, but since he was a special order they kept him isolated, and called me this morning he’s ready to pickup.

The triple bags were
Thick and I couldn’t see him too clearly and during acclimation I noticed these white protrusions and moved into an acclimation box for observation

Salinity 1.026
Alk 8.5
Ph 8.2
Calc 400 ish
Nitrate 5
Phosphate .02-.05

Owner of the store is a marine biologist and said this is a little unusual, probably from being netted or handled and it should slough off within 24 hours

Im having a hard time seeing fish clearly and not sure if its either the acclimation box or pink lighting.
At one point I see early HLLE but to your question which may be netting damage, skin tag or spine from an urchin.
Although fish was quarantined from shipper, then shipped and placed in store display. We want to assume fish has something foreign and do even a short quarantine of 14-21 days

Was never introduced to store display
Was kept in quarantine from supplier for 2 weeks, then shipped to LFS in and they quarantined additional 5 days in independent qt tank. Was not in water with other fish for approx 2.5-3 weeks

I’ll try and get whiter pics

Tiny white spots are micro bubbles on acclimation box. I am talking about the white stuff coming off of its mouth, nose, eye areas

I sent same pics to the LFS owner, he said

that the lateral line does not show any signs of erosion and it would be much lighter if HLLE

Regarding the face protrusions he thinks it's damage that occurred in the shipping process, such as getting caught in the corner of a bag and trying to fight out or getting caught in a net

I agree, this looks like minor handling damage. That said, I’m a little concerned that the quarantine process this fish went through may not have been comprehensive enough….but maybe?

Just a note - holding a tang in an acclimation box can increase the amount of this sort of damage. I’d consider releasing it to the main tank.

Last night I noticed improvement and some of the protrusions were gone. I also noticed the tang was pecking and trying to get out. I decided to release him feeling that I was adding to stress and might be making the situation worse. I put some thawed frozen emerald food in the bin and he happily ate it. Upon inspection I was not able to see any signs of sickness

When I released him from the box, he came out on his own and promptly went behind the rockwork and wouldn’t come out for the rest of the night.

This morning I walked by the tank and I saw a orange blur. He was out on his own but hid and I can see him looking out of the rocks. I feel he’s just stressed and adjusting

He’s looking better today! Shy but curious at the same time. A lot of those white things are gone and his colors are bolder.

He will watch me if I’m several feet from the tank but hides if I get close. just need time to build up some trust
