First time on here, figured Im ready to show my little project I’ve been working on for the past year. Tanks a 5ft system, all custom made. system had typically started with cheap Mars LED lighting and cheap Chinese wave makers. Over the year more research was done. Methods evolved and so did my system. Tank had started as an LPS display but I soon found the love for SPS and the challenging obstacles that were to follow.

To date the system experienced just about every pest and unfortunate encounters known to SPS reefing keeping.
I had the pleasure of fighting Mantis shrimp, SPS eating Starfish, Zoanthid eating Nudibranch, Acro eating flatworm, Acan eating Shrimp (camel’s) and Coral bleaching (Chiller death). After all these lovely setbacks over the year I still pursued and managed to finally kick back with a beer and enjoy my little slice of reef.

Tank: 1545mm x 620mm x 690mm

Sump: 790mm x 490mm x 260mm

Lighting: 8x54w ATI Powermodule and Maxpect 70W nano razor for the sump

Flow: Maxspect gyre xf150, 2 x Tunze 6025, 1 x SW-15 Jebao 1 x RW-15 Jebao 1x 3000L wavemaker

Skimmer: Ikstrakt 4 Reef octopus 2000L

Dosing pump: 1x Kamoer 3channel 1 x Marine colour 3 channel

ATO: Smart ATO

Water changes: NSW

Reactor: JNS apha 2E biopellet reactor, after market active carbon reactor

Chiller: Hailea hc-300a

Dosing solutions: Randys recipe #1- ALK & CAL

Stock: 1x Powder blue 1x Blue tang 1x baby blue tang 1x Yellow tang 1x Orange shoulder tang 1x Green pale wrasse 1x Bristle tooth tang 1x Scopa tang 1x Mandarin fish 1x Male anthia 3x Female anthia 2x Male clown fish 3x female clown fish 4x peppermint shrimp 1x Yellow goby 3x lawn mower goby 2x large starfish 3x sand sifting starfish 1x Powder blue 1x fang goby 1x green clown goby

Very basic filtration system. I run no socks only pads. I don’t run GFO, I throw in a bag of Phosguard near the return pump when i start to pickup on higher then usual levels. I run active carbon in a aftermarket reactor that branches off the return feed. I keep a small amount of cheato in my last chamber for Po4 removal which is fed by the return. last chamber was always used as a frag section but has more so become a nursery for the weak or wounded corals.

Im a Fifo commercial waste water/potable water operator so I’m away for half the year. I have built my system and developed ways to make things more “automated” with fail safe features regarding power failure and notifications.

System is hard plumbed in, I have an 1000L IBC plumbed up through the house to the tank which is controlled off my custom power board next to the main system. tank has an overflow bulk head weir that exits out the base of the tank. Water changes are done on a 3-4week basis roughly 30-40% depending on how I feel. With a flick of a switch water changes are usually done within a 25min timeframe.

Power board consists of a Kw meter to monitor power consumption. very simple clean and effective. Due to the consistent routine water changes, I have never needed to dose Potassium or Magnesium.

Parameters are as follows
Alk 7.7Dkh
Cal 435ppm
Mg 1445
p04 0.02
No3 0

Will throw a link up for anyone wanting more details and photos regarding my build.

Experimented with nutrient control, initially had issues with Bryposis and Cyano during the early stages of the system. Decided to test Macro + Algae turf scrubber. I removed any Ionic po4 removal and allowed the system to balance out with natural nutrient control. over the 10 week period I eventuated with a stable system and a good routine.

Pros: Cheap, works
Cons: High RO turn around, Caused more evaporation which was extremely noticeable. Scrubber tended to spray outside of the sump if it wasn't monitored on a day to day basis causing issues with water pooling and low level (ATO). Couldn't trust the scrubber if I were to leave for a week unattended.

In the long run I reconverted the last chamber back to a frag/nursery chamber. Algae scrubber out the door and Phosgaurd back in the filter back against the return. Cheato was left in the system. I found the phosphate levels to be low 0.02 and never really caused any issues with both the macro and the phosgaurd.
