Today I woke up to literally seeing my baby hippo disappear. Every morning I usually wake up to him just doing laps in the tank ready to eat but today was different. He was no where to be seen so I immediately started looking around the tank even moving the rocks knowing it would probably cause the other fish stress. But nothing. I couldn’t find anything and I genuinely was confused bc I knew he couldn’t disappear like that. Then out of nowhere I noticed my anemone super plump and I thought to myself no way could my hippo tang was eaten. Well since I had no other choice, I decided to remove the anemone and guess what I found. Sadly he had taken the life of my hippo tang who was quarantined and super healthy. I had this anemone from the live rock that I bought from Florida and never thought much of it. But over the years I would randomly lose fish and genuinely never thought twice. Now I know my anemone was killing fish and stupidly I thought only carpet anemones eat fish…. Good news is that he is no longer in my tank…..

Day before of my hippo.

What kind of anemone?
Honestly I have no idea. It had really long tentacles and was almost translucent. I never thought much of it since it was toward the back glass and barely could see hence why I never thought it was doing much.

It looks like Bartholomea annulata aka corkscrew or curlique anemone. They are capable of eating fish, but they don’t typically. Sorry for the loss of your blue tang OP.

Thank you. I think you’re right about the type of anemone. I did read now that they’re considered aggressive and love to sting and kill fish. I mean it was probably 3 times the size of the tang when expanded. I just didn’t know they can be that aggressive. Even my fire fish has a mark on his side and I’m wondering if that’s why.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I guess a positive from it's passing, is at least now you know what has been causing fish to disappear.

I wish the rest of your fishies and yourself the best!
