Saltmix Parameters bring on the test results

Looks like my perception was off. Looks like I did find through some searching some people that have reported testing under 1400.

But looks like so far overall you can expect to get around what the 2009 results were.

Kordon sea salt:

35ppt via refractometer and weighed out in a new unopened batch and also done by calculator. 3340 grams of salt in 21 gallons. However i found it to be closer to 34.5ppt on the refractometer after results. First impressions, not impressed. Very hard to open bucket. Parameters seem low but may be lower salinity. Apparently the owner of this brand split off from Instant Ocean and started his own company. Salt is slightly cheaper than IO.

I doubt it. If so I would think the IO triton results would have been closer to the RC triton results. IO tested to 380 and RC at 847. Around this time next week we'll have a 3rd sample. We also have JimWelsh's IO triton result with Li at 523.7.

It seems the boost from the IO batch to RC batch is scaling up in RC when they increased the magnesium. Is it likely the magnesium is adding lithium based on the increase you see here?

I don't know whether they source ingredients from the same supplier for all chemicals in each salt mix, but there must be something complicating this since magnesium only went up by 15%, but lithium went up by 123%.

I got a new package from unique corals today to ship in to Triton. So, redid the test with a new batch of Tropic Marine Pro-Reef since I gave the rest of the previous batch away already.

Alk: 7.3
Ca: ~460-470 (.07)
Mg: ~1410-1440 (.05)


Salinity was at the low end of the 35ppt line. I'll be curious what the calculated salinity will be at from the triton results. The RC I read at the high end of the 35ppt line and it came back as 34.99ppt from triton's results.

Dropping off the samples tomorrow to be mailed off.

I understand peoples concerns about variation from methods, testing, etc... but when a large enough sample size is pulled together, those variations become less relevant as they apply across the board for all. (e.g. variations would exist for all the brands, test kits, etc...) A mean value with standard deviations for the each product would make it easier to identify outliers.

Tropic Marine Pro-Reef Looks like the best

It is what I would use if I didn't use basic IO. The low cost of IO and higher cost of Tropic Marine though is what prevents me from switching.
