Water Change with No Reservoir to Mix Salt in

Hey All,

I'm setting up a 75 gallon reef tank.

I don't have the space to have a big pre-made supply of salt water for my water changes and will have to mix salt every time I do a water change. Does anyone have a good way to do water changes if they cant have a big supply of mixed water?

You could always just get those Brute garbage cans, many people use them. They don't take up that much space. But you could also just find some 5 gal buckets, and do it 5 gallons at a time.

Do you have a rodi unit? Making rodi water takes a long time. You can mix the salt at the time you do the water changes, its not ideal but it can be done, but you still need rodi water made in advance. You need something to hold the water in advance.

Yeah I have a 75 gallon per day rodi. I see what you're saying about it taking a long time. Maybe I can store 2 5 gal buckets at a time.

I used one of these as a kalk storage container for a year or so before switching to a brute. The small has a capacity of 11 gallon but that is filled to the rim. It actually rolled fairly well when almost full which surprised me. What ever you get since space is limited I would mount a float switch or something to shut off rodi when full then just mix in the same container.

Before I bought a Brute and Pump I used 5g water bottles (like the cooler bottles) since they were easy to fill and then cap and shake to mix.

Now I have a small 20g Brute on wheels with a submerged pump and it's super easy!

I just use my sumps . I turn off the flow drain the sump. Refill sump with fresh ro/di , mix new salt. Let the heaters get temp up and turn return pump back on. Simple

I did two things for my 75

1. Design my tank to need as little water changing as possible (near zero)

2. Use 5 gallon buckets and only do small amounts when I am doing them.

I used 5-gallon buckets and made the water to order. bucket, salt, water, power head to mix.

I've been living with brute garbage cans for nearly 40 years.
I currently have 2 of the 45 gallon size and a couple 32 gallon containers.

Using a fast mixing salt really helps when you can't store saltwater. That is why I use red sea's.
