A Dussumieri tang came up on my Live Aquaria in stock notifications last night. By the time I woke up it was gone. You suckers are fast! Hope it does well for someone.

Who has kept one of these guys? Please share your experience. Anything I should know before I get one? Anything it shouldn't be housed with? This is one of those dream fish for me and the main reason I want a 400g reef...well...ya know...besides the fact that it's a 400g reef. :D

I have a 9" Duss in my 240gl reef tank.

Fowleri > Dussu
Personally I find the opposite.

Fowleris don’t appear to go through the same colour changing phases as Dussumieri’s will.
One of the reasons I personally love the Olivasceus, Dussumieri, Binotatus and some others is due to them going through changes in patterns all the time.

Disagree they're mood can change their colors in an instant. They have much more colors than the Dussu. And no, the orange shoulders and bristletooths dont even compare to Fowleri.

Totally get you - I was more comparing the Orange Shoulder and Twin Spot Bristletooth in terms of how they can do very similar changes in patterns behaviour wise.

I will still prefer the Dussumieri against the Fowleri as the much more muted colours I find nicer compared to a bunch of bright colours “clashing” together.

Dussimier Tangs are nice but I agree with others. The Fowleri is the best of the group. When I got this Fowleri, it was around 4 inches and it was a brown fish. I've had it almost 7 years now and it's around 7-8 inches and absolutely stunning.

Seeing that fowleri’s are near impossible to get I would go with the Dussemeri if you know a source for the folweri pleases DM me .. I currently have a Dussemeri and have had fowleri’s in the past and they are great fish and very slow growing imo vs Dussemeri

I am not sure about what size they usually reach in captivity, but I saw a few that were almost every inch the full 20” (50cm) at the aquarium in Langkawi, Malaysia. Even if these regularly get to 11-12+” in captivity, I wouldn’t be comfortable putting them in anything shorter than a 10’ (120”) long tank. They’re one of the Tangs that get massive from what I’ve seen and I doubt they’re a slow grower.

I’m going to claim I have the youngest/smallest true Hawaiian dussumeiri in the world.

Random update. I’ve had my dussumeiri probably 3-4 years now. It’s about 10” and really starting to color up. The gold eye band is starting to show and the orange fin margins. The blue patterns on the face are becoming more noticeable. It’s also a pretty docile fish, though admittedly a pig. It’s in a 500G system.

I’m not sure you can tell well in this video though. Was very drab when I got her.

Just give that duss another few years then he will run the tank, which is the problem that I’m running into now. 20+” duss behaving like the entire 540G is his.

There’s so many large aggressive fish and it’s crowded id be surprised if it picked that fight but who knows haha
