I just don't test ammonia in the bucket, but I change 100% water anytime I smell something fishy, on the basis of routine daily 1000% change...
I believe that the pinkish color on the reef butterfly is also caused by ammonia buildup right?
That could be from ammonia, but other things can cause pink/red colored tissue. I would test the ammonia, just to ensure that isn't a problem, you cannot actually smell ammonia, the fishy smell is from heterotrophic bacteria breaking down material, which in turn can form ammonia.
Depending on the pH, you'll want the long term ammonia level to remain below 0.25 ppm
