New sand came today. Any suggestions on the easiest way to swap the sandbed? I was thinking of just siphoning it out over 3 or 4 waterchanges, but wanted to put it out there for suggestions.

As ugly as it was, the custom stage was exciting because it meant it was all working like it was supposed to! :squinting-face-with-tongue:

I thought Duncans were supposed to be beginner friendly??? I still need to get one.

You saw this in my thread but I went with TBS live sand. Big chonky stuff. I love it! I still get some blowing around though. I plan to get some of the Two Little Fishies Reborn calcium reactor media to fill those spots in.
Yeah, Duncan's are supposed to be an entry level lps. So far mine has been pretty easy, once I stopped panicking ever time I noticed it was closed up. The green flesh has extended to cover the entire stalk now and the single head is about 1.5x the size it was when i bought it. I am hoping I will get some baby heads any day now. My coworker said his took a couple months to settle in and then grew 3-4 new heads a month. Based on my research, the frag I picked up is an Australian branching variety.

This came up in my memories feed on my gallery today...it was taken 12 years ago today. Don't have the torch anymore, but still have the clownfish!

I really hope my clowns decide to buddy up to my new torch :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

...and that they last that long!

Mine have loved hosting euphyllias. Torches, hammers, etc. If it's there, they will host it.

I plan to move my clowns to my cube once I swap the sand bed and make sure my parameters are stable...I'm being extra cautious with them as I am rather attached to them.

This was taken the day I added them to my tank...April 4. 2011!

Phew....glad that is over with...swapped out the sand and did about a 10 gal water change in the process.

Before I started
20240422_171136.jpg

Used a net and gently scooped out as much sand as possible.

Then siphoned out the rest during the water change.

Added the new sand...it got pretty mucky!

It is settling quickly though!

Much happier with the grain size...should have gone this route from the start.

I am so tempted!!! A local store has these available...What do you guys think of the prices and potential for heavy editing?

Honestly to me that torch just looks like a regular indo gold to me? They sell those for about half that price (per head) around here. I have one and it's stunning.

The colour of the frogspawn at the bottom of the torch pic makes me think it's pretty heavily edited too. Disagree with @Gumbies R Us on that one.

Those would make a nice hammer garden! I don't know what a "wolverine torch" is.

Came home from work today and found one of the chromis dead and stuck to the overflow. I immediately assumed mini cycle from swapping the sand bed so I checked the ammonia...surprisingly, it was fine. I did notice it was acting a little off last night and hiding away from the others...not sure what caused it.

Perhaps oxygen levels tanked briefly?

Hmm, skimmer should help. Was wondering if kicking up old sand bed would do it. The sand bed effects is a mystery to me. Probably can discard oxygenation then. Did the cromis seem stressed before?
It went from being out and about constantly to hiding and sitting near the bottom yesterday night. There was a definitive change in behavior. But no signs of damaged fins or anything to indicate bullying (I have read they can single out and bully each other to death if kept in smaller groups).

@JoJosReef - I'm gonna hit my LFS tomorrow to start building my clean up crew... any recommendations on types and quantities of things to start with?
Tank doesn't have much algae to nibble on, yet. I'd start with ceriths, a couple of trochus and astraeas to get started on film algae, and maybe a conch if you think diatoms will show up soon (conches LOVE diatoms on the sand bed). Some Nassarius that can help with extra food--you can always keep them fed too by feeding more or target feeding till the tank takes off. After things start ramping up, then's when to think about the heavies.
