My sump is no where near as clean as the ones I have seen on here... The first chamber is filter socks and skimmer, middle chamber is a bunch of rocks, third is a few more rocks and the pump. I can't remember the last time I cleaned the glass on the inside or the outside of it...

Eventually I want to build a small room around it. The basement isn't heated and I don't want to heat the whole thing, but I have 2 600w heaters to keep my tank warm and without the basement heated my tank will cools down fast when the heaters are off. There's a lot I want to do someday lol

Question:

I don’t have a skimmer. Do I need one? What does it really do? What would be a good one for my system? How much are they usually?

I'm a skimmer fanatic.
Never had a tank without one.
That being said, some run one, some don't.
I've run 3 at a time before.
Depends on what you're doing with your tank, if you want to keep nutrients or have other means of export or not.
Many factors, many reasons many skimmers out there.
Can be very confusing.
If you are interested in one just let us know and we'll run it down here on the Smorgasbord.
I've bought, used and sold, made at least 20 different ones in my fishing career.
