When I was in Germany last month I was surprised that most people assumed we are a typical company, sure, headquartered in Germany but we just have everything made in China like everyone else. Well, that is the farthest from the case, our products are designed and produced in our factory in Penzberg Germany, I would say we are likely the most vertically integrated company in the aquarium industry as almost all steps are in house and most that aren't are done within a short driving distance of our factory. Additionally, there are several misconceptions on the Osmolator 3 that I wanted to address, primarily that it lacks a safety sensor or that it is in someway a radical change from the tried and true Osmolator. It does indeed have a safety and it is identical in the primary functions and safety system to its predecessor, all that was really changed is less wires, waterproof and a vastly improved pump.

First to share is this factory tour video from Fragbox Corals in Canada, I was apparently at the Interzoo booth in Nuremburg when this was made-

Next is a video on production of the Osmolator 3, this one is in German-

I will update this thread when we finish editing my video for our Tunze Tech Tips YouTube channel on Osmolator 3 troubleshooting.

Finally have my video live.

Additionally, Scott at Aquarium Specialty made a blog post about the Osmo 3 based on an interview I did with him

Thanks Roger. I’m always amazed Tunze does not get more market share. Extremely reliable GERMAN products at competitive pricing. I’ve never had a Tunze product fail on me. I still have a box of the first 6025 nanostreams and 1073 return pump I break out whenever I set up a temporary tank etc. These are probably 15 years old!

I think the cloud edition pumps will be a massive step once released! (Crossing my fingers I can program them to do alternating gyre at user defined intervals)

From the beta testing I did on the cloud control system this is absolutely possible, you can set every pump pretty much minute by minute and you can set various triggers to change the pattern like time or for example temperature (shut off pumps to prevent a heat increase beyond a set point) or pH (turn on additional pumps when pH drops below a certain point).

Thank you!

Thanks for the shoutout Roger. We have Osmolator 3 units in stock. If you are new to us then please see our shop by brand page and livestock selection. We are coming up on our 19th anniversary this September.

I have a couple of questions if that’s ok…could you explain how the safety features work? I believe it’s a thermal switch, if that is correct would the thermal switch still trigger if the room temp was the same as the tank water temperature?

I also read that there are two max fill settings, one being more suitable for a nano tank, could you please state what these are as I have been unable to find this information, how long would the pump run before the safety cutoff kicks in and how many litres of water would be added to the tank if the pump didn’t turn off in normal running mode and the safety cut off were triggered.

Thanks.

It is fundamentally the same as the older 3155 Osmolator, the optic sensor is the primary sensor, it turns the pump off and on and controls the water level, when the pump turns on a timer starts and it can only run the pump 10 minutes before it times out, same as the predecessor, it will never run again after timing out, you have to power cycle it to reset it.

The safety sensor is a micro heater and micro temp sensor, it heats to 90 degrees F roughly, so generally above even what someone might run in a quarantine or for discus, the sensor has to detect that this temp is consistent, on power up the white light flashes indicating it is calibrating and it won't exit calibration if it cannot get multiple consistent readings. This is most commonly because it is started with the safety in water. It will eventually calibrate and start but not until the water drops and it can get consistent readings. If anything drops the temperature outside the calibrated range, that triggers too high, but this is based on the data gathered in that start up calibration. Usually the only things that can affect it is a strong draft of cold air or water or something touching it and taking away the heat.

There is only one fill level, but you can set a boost mode for the pump, this is more for high head pressure, typically boost mode would be used if you had the reservoir in the basement for example, in stock the pump can handle 12ft, boost mode is 20ft.

If you have a nano tank, the Osmolator 3 Nano lacks the safety sensor but the time limits are very short about a 1.25 or 2.5 minutes depending on a setting (this is instead of the boost mode feature of the full size unit) the pump also runs slower so fills are limited to about 1 quart or 2 quarts before the time limit would shut it down. Generally if the tank is under 30 gallons this is probably the better choice.
