Anyone still prefer the 10K look, or even 6.5K? What's with all the windex colored tanks?

I think my absolute favorite were the Acqualine Bushke DE 10K's. I ran those in an Aquamedic Fixture for years, but they were hard to source so I switched to Ushio. Here's an old 180g I used to run with Ushio bulbs:

Awesome tank! I love planted marine tanks.

Aqualine Buscke 10ks kicked butt! explosive growth to be had ! started getting difficult to aquire back in 2013, I switched out to a reeflux 12k, just wasn't the same. : /

I have my lights ramp from blue for an hour then transition to to a 15k look over 4 hours. I have the 15k look for 4 hours then it’s 4 hours back down. For full intensity daytime viewing I adjusted blues 100% then ramp up the whites just enough so the glowy corals stand out a bit but light still looks whiteish.

work threads are different. when you have 20 GHA tanks given to you in one place to work, methods that reduce growback are quickly found.
I can cause gha in otherwise controlled tanks if I just twist the kessil dial the opposite way.

I can grow algae in any reef tank in the world by shining a 6K HPS light meant for growing vegetation on it.

much like how old vho bulbs tended to cause cyano, and abate when updated.
that doesnt mean many home tanks arent tuned to run just fine on 10K, yours is agreed.

blue balance is a core aspect of work thread management and getting compliance in a high degree of worked systems but only in algae challenge or cyano threads, for a normal tank if its not expressing those invaders/white is np

we specifically start all dry start reefs with heavy blues in my work threads, whites will just fill it all up with GHA totally, each surface reflecting all directions/growth potency
Work threads?

this was my 30 shallow lagoon, it got about an hour and a half of direct sunlight a day, and that was always my favorite time to enjoy my reef.

Agreed! i love when my tank gets hit with the morning sun and looking at it before work or on the weekend with a cup of coffee and no lights on.

the corals seem to love it too. Essentially an all natural “ramp up” 79D5F5A1-FEFC-4162-B756-E9B7410286F5.jpeg B5C6D779-61F9-4AE2-8517-79CA287EE4AA.jpeg 9A54F2B0-235D-4BCB-8B9A-7ADC470CFE80.jpeg

It was XM 10K 250 on magnetic M80 ballast with 4 blue plus

Ah yes, these were great bulbs - I ran these with true actinics on VHO's .... Tried running Ushio 10k a few months ago, but didn't like them. Is there any bulb now, that comes close? I may run through the Hamilton bulb offering next. Currently running Radium & Phoenix.

I took this today, it’s my top rock piece with just the whites on. I use the Orbit Marine LOOP. I have it set to be more white because that’s what I prefer. However, I didn’t notice all this color until I was looking at it up close and personal during my cleaning today. Also, I have hair algae, but I don’t mind as long as it’s not taking over. It feels more natural to me.

14,000K Hamilton Halides. You get some of the blue without the tank looking like windex. Other colors still appear natural looking. My purple tang's tail is still yellow. I did run 10,000K metal halides for more than 20 years before I switched to these 14,000K's a few months ago. At first I didn't like the 14,000K look, but it has grown on me, and I'll probably stick with it going forward.

I have a 14k Phoenix metal halide plus a XR15 Radion for evening fun lighting and I much prefer daylight viewing over blue. I really do want to try a lower K bulb though because I love the natural white look of a reef like that.

Here's the picture I took just before switching out the 10,000K for the 14,000 K. You can see how much whiter the 10,000K bulbs look...

No Ushio 14K ! Ushio 10K is a true ugly bulb :D

Whew!! I kept put them on my growout system, and I thought they looked terrible.... I ran them for 2 months - just to see if I could adjust. I couldn't. May try the 14k Ushio paired with some Orphek Blue + light bars I have, in my 300..... Thank you for sharing the video!
