I asked ChatGPT how many 1 gallon water changes would I need to get to 100% new water in my 50 gallon tank.

“Here are the first few steps showing the percentage of old water remaining after each 1-gallon replacement:

1. 98.00%

2. 96.04%

3. 94.12%

4. 92.24%

5. 90.40%

6. 88.59%

7. 86.82%

8. 85.08%

9. 83.38%

10. 81.71%

This continues following the exponential decay pattern. By the 50th change, about 36.12% of the old water remains.

To reach less than 1% old water, you’d need around 229 changes.

To reach 0.01% old water, you’d need around 528 changes.”

I don’t know if the math is correct but I found it interesting.

I don’t know if the math is correct but I found i

528 2% changes leave 0.002% of the original water. Seems like a possible fail to me.

229 2% changes leaves 1%, which is correct.
