Some of the best purchases are absolute requirements, like an ATO or RODI system. I can't imagine even trying this without those.

However, the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread was the Neptune Apex/Trident systems. I don't control a whole like with them yet but I monitor the heck out of my system and manually dose the alk based on the results.

In the 90s I grew lots of acans And sticks. bought a bunch of cole Parmer pumps for ato and kalk reactor, calcium reactor, water changes etc. years later when they came out with reliable aquarium grade devices I sold some of these pumps off and probably pocketed at least $15000 bucks After reselling them did the same with some toledo mettler gear. It I consider almost every hobby brand purchase to be a straight up loss but by buying lab grade equipment it lasts longer and retains its resell ability.

For me, my best “investment” was probably grabbing a high-quality auto top-off system. Saved me so much time and hassle with water levels, especially when I can’t check on the tank every day. I feel like anything that adds convenience ends up being worth it over time.
Outside of reef stuff, I’m into CS2, and I tend to trade skins pretty regularly. When I want to clear out my inventory, instant sell cs2 skins has been a go-to for getting quick cash.

Having an ATO has been a game-changer for my tank!

Dosing system and ATO.

Apex too expensive and not needed. I have one on one of my tanks and on my other tank I do not. Both run just fine with that expensive Apex equipment. IMO.

What dosing system are you using?

Whether it is buying equipment of higher quality or buying something that will be worth it in the long run, I feel like we as reefers invest in the products that we buy. I am wondering what is the best investment purchase you have made? Maybe it was buying an RODI that way you didn't have to keep using lfs water, or maybe it was buying an Apex unit to keep everything automated. Curious to know everyone's input!
I'm going to say either my lighting, because without it coral wouldn't be possible; or my RO/DI machine because it saves me tons of time and energy.

How many tanks have been lost because of heaters. Either getting stuck on and cooking the tank or failing and providing no heat?

For that reason I think the
Innovative Marine HELIO heater controller I use has done the most to keep my “investment” safe.

I could not imagine having to go back and forth from my LFS to get water for my tank.
