in blue light it looks brown. under white light it turns out greenish. it is a dusty substance.
starting up a reeftank. done a lot to start it going. ammonia and nitrite won't drop. now i am using microbe-lift special blend in combination with micro-lift nite-out. this is what is happening. filtermaterial turns dark brown within a good day.
last ammonia check less than .25 is it going the right way? 1000011866.jpg

the struggle is real. it's running about 3,5 months. no live sand and no live rocks. waiting with adding live stock because of ammonia and nitrite presence. it's a red sea all in one. in the back i have put a lot of ceramic rings and seachem seagel and seachem purigen and aquaforest life bio fil.

Nitrites are irrelevant in reef aquaria. Do you show measurable nitrates? At 3.5 months your tank is cycled as long as you started with an ammonia source followed by nitrifying bacteria added. If you have no coral you do not need lights on. What you see is probably just diatoms which go away on their own. Do a water change and siphon your sand then add one or two fish.

If you don't have any livestock, leave the lights off. The light is making that stuff grow. Nitrifying bacteria don't need light.
