So Gandalf makes a comment along the lines of "Shadowfax and I have been on many journeys together" when he summons him in The Two Towers. In reality, Shadowfax was King Theodon's horse that Gandalf actually kind of took without permission. See, the king basically told Gandalf to take any horse and bug off. So, Gandalf straight up jacks the kings horse and rolls out before anyone can say anything. Gandalf rode him to Rivendale then set him free to return to Rohan. After that, Shadowfax was wild and would not let anyone ride him. Later, Theodon gifts Shadowfax to Gandalf, and the rest is history.
