I'm ordering parts for new build and was wondering if you could tie two 1" drains into a bigger, say 1 1/2" drain to sump and use just one 1 1/2" gate valve. Herbie method will be used. Would this work just fine, or be a nightmare i would regret. Thanks guys

I have herbie method and only use two 1" drains. There is a gate valve on my siphon line and nothing on my standpipe line. Why would you need two gate valves?

I'm actually a little surprised that worked. Horizontal lines on siphon drains can be problematic enough, up turns usually result in the drain getting airlocked.

I assume your question is based on having three drains, tying two together as the siphon and retaining the third as the open channel? You certainly could do that, though it seems shame not to take advantage of three drains and do a bean.

Yes, your exactly right. New larger overflow box has three 1" drains. One will be the emergency overflow only. I was wanting to know if i could tie the other two together with just one large pipe to sump, with one large gate valve. Ive gotten used to the herbie, no noise at all. Sorry I didn't make this clearer. The horizon piping has had no trouble at all, even turned up to get into the sump. The overflow box is probably about a foot higher than entry into sump, so it causes no problem. On new tank build, this 75g sump will be directly below DT. Thanks everyone. Any more thought would be appreciated.

What did you end up doing? I'm buying parts for my new system as well and was planning on plumbing my two 1" overflow drains into one 1-1/2" pipe. Did this work for you?

It will work if you place a valve on the main siphon BEFORE you join the two of them. If it were me I wouldn't do it though. Odds are it probably won't be quiet with the large intake of air on the secondary drain line.

I ended up using two separate one inch lines, to filter socks, and one emergency overflow line to the refugium chamber. The first two are about two inches below the water, while the emergency line is about two inches above the water. If any of the other ones get somewhat stopped up, the third one lets me know, cause it will be splashing loudly.
