I hope this means that the episodes won't just be infomercials to sell BRS products like so many of the others videos are.
He said it’s not, and is solely reliant on private funding from the community. I guess we will see, but I know most people feel information should be free and don’t like to pay to see videos. But making videos does cost money and a lot of time.

yeah, I just kind of lose interest when I see a table full of "new stuff" they are trying to sell.

I get they depend on the sales, I just think there are better ways to advertise, like at the end of the Informational Video give a list of Equipment used. Those who are serious about reefing will pay attention to that also. And maybe refrain from pushing products that will be discontinued within a year (Aquamax ConeS skimmers for example).

$9/month plus ads? You must be joking.

That is more expensive than Netflix.

Can’t have it both ways for a successful channel. Either you pay and watch unadulterated content, or sponsors pay and you watch a long advertisement.

I just hope the first guest or first topic is not tropic Marin, we know what the products. Nothing against Lou but I prefer to hear new stuff. I like him and Elliot working together.

The first series will be helping new hobbyists setup a tank that will work 100/100 times. No product pushing or sales. Just pure information. Do this and be successful.

Just a heads up, it is pay to play, only members will see the videos and membership is $10/month. That's how he's going to stay out of company pockets. Ahhh, just saw someone already said this.

I understand the need to monetize, but I'm not sure what makes people just jump to $9 minimum. Do people think their once a week videos have the same value as Netflix?

Pay or don't pay. But to get access to his experience and knowledge unadulterated will be very helpful to the hobby. I would rather pay and know what I'm getting isn't to drive sales with a some information mixed in. If you have ever watched his BRS videos, you know he has gone through many changes in his reefing philosophy based on some pretty darn good experiments

Value will be personal to each individual.

Some months Netflix is worth the $15+. Most months it isn’t. I’m sure the same applies here.

For someone brand new, they can drop $10 a month and know they are getting correct information to help them.

Or they can do like many of us had to do and spend hundreds, if not thousands, of hours digging through the poop to find a gem. Some people enjoy that digging, some don’t.

There was some of that, but they were often honest about product issues and provided awesome useful info like the PAR and spectrum tuning maps that I have used several times over the years. Even after BRS absorbed Neptune, Ryan was not shy about sharing that the Sky had gaps in the spectrum and there were better lights for the money. I will miss some of that content!

This is in many ways a very ambitious project-in the current world it is tough to get people to willingly pay for unbiased information rather than just selling them products in thinly veiled infomercials. I hope he is successful. He has always struck me as a decent guy, and he certainly has good experience to share. I will subscribe to the youtube channel and see how it goes. However once the paywall goes up, the content is going to have to be really good-or at least really entertaining-for long term success.

Again I hope he is successful, and I applaud the stated goals. I just think it is a tough business model in a world where everyone wants something for nothing.

Regardless I hope he has enjoyed his sabbatical/family time, and that he again finds success.

Serious Reefs "wants to change the way information is shared in this hobby" by making a paywalled podcast?

One of the best parts of this hobby has always been the communal aspect of sharing information with fellow hobbyists as we learn together, Reef2Reef being a prime example. Why would I ever support someone trying to turn that into a subscription service?

As others have pointed out, the price point here is totally wrong. Anyone who says otherwise is kinda willfully shilling the reality away.

The price of a Netflix subscription is simply too much to ask the community. I'm not sure the value proposition will resonate with most people when you consider that what they are providing is free in the first place. Elliot doesn't provide any knowledge that isn't given freely at Humble.Fish for prophylactic quarantine protocols. Most $10 subscriptions give you access to countless hours of multi million dollar content.

Who is this really for? It feels like a niche target for an already niche community. I don't think many new reefers are gonna shell out cash for this, and those that have been around a while likely have no need for it.

I actually like Ryan and despite it's detractors i support BRS, and agree with basically everything Elliott says from a philosophical standpoint, but I'm struggling to see a reality where people pay $10/month for this unless they sign up for a month, get everything they need and cancel.

Don't want to be a downer... But they need to come down off that price.

This is where I'm at. I'll probably wait 6 months buy a month binge watch the channel then wait a few months and do it again. Unless they are planning on doing multiple videos a day keeping a long term subscription doesn't seem like a good value.

There is nothing free. Look at the ads on every site or video that is supposedly “free”. Your information is sold by many of the sites you visit

what do you think he's going to say that you cant find free ? There isnt any step by step procedure to have a perfect tank. We are creating an ecosystem in a glass box with living things , everyone is going to have a different amount of success and problems . With that being said , obviously there are helpful pointers and advice that help people be more successful , and for most of us thats why we are here . The subscription sounds like the channel should be called...
