I only got into this hobby less than a year ago. I bought my first Red Sea 200 max not knowing much about it but I am a technically oriented professional and I can figure things out pretty well. I wanted to get the best there was for the size I wanted and here it is 10 months later. But then in September I got a second 30 gallon Red Sea tank, and recently I bought a 10 gallon nano. I'm middle aged and I got divorced and I'm living in an apartment and waiting to buy a home in about a year or two which of course I'm concerned about moving the tanks but I presume throwing money at problem will mitigate the issue. nonetheless, sometimes I wonder how did I get obsessed with this hobby which is truly enamored me and how many tanks can I have without being insane? I mean, For example i like to go on holidays but now I'm not sure how I would do that other than hiring someone to come in to check my tanks, but I'm pretty obsessive about my tanks and every day I'm tinkering with them and adjusting this that or with constant husbandry. I work from home a lot which helps.

i would love to know how many tanks do you have? And what do you do when you go on vacation? What is the upper limit of tank someone should have before they are considered obsessive about the hobby? I know these are subjective questions but I would love feedback. My first tank from 10 months ago has finally cycled to the extent at everything's flourishing. I have to say the game changer seemed to occur, number one, the phosphate reactor, and number two, the refugium.

here is my first tank 10 months late. I went a little crazy and got a $600 holy Grail torch and she's been doing wonderful. But I am really nervous to leave it [ tank] for more than a day or two.

I heard of another doctor where I buy my coral. He spent $10,000 on the holy Grail mixed color colony. People have their fancies.

also attached post are my second, third and fourth (nonsetup ). I recently purchased the 9.6 gallon UNS45A now and thought maybe I just want 1 gallon more, so I bought that other one with the hang on refugium which I don't know what I'm gonna do with it yet.

also fit the 42 gallon , I had to figure out a way to make the refugium so I just divided a section out out of my sump and used the plastic divider and got a second small flow pump and LED light. For the 29 gallon I just got a acclamation box to go inside the tank and I put macro out in there.
I know I've broken some rules along the way i.e. things they say you shouldn't do it done, but it's a hobby and mine to play I guess.

I have two tanks, 90 gal in the living area and a 15gal in the Home office.

Both run fully automated, so effectively there is no difference between being home or overseas for 4-6 weeks for business/vacation.

I currently have two tanks. Automation helps a ton, have friends/family who can stop by to refill ato containers, feed some frozen and give a general idea of how the tank is doing has been greatly beneficial.

I have considered doing LFS service but not sure how it would works. Meaning not sure if it’s worth it for them. It would be 2-3 times a year depending on vacation to do basic check or emergency which would be my fear while Im not available.

2. A heavily stocked 55 and a 10gal for snail breeding. Both are fully automated. Otherwise I wouldn't have tanks because I am very busy with running multiple businesses, kids and their activities and travel.

I have no idea how I will go on vacation because I have two butterflyfish that only want live worms

Don’t buy finicky eaters if you want a vacation!

I like to vacation on tropical reefs. They are what the tank is supposed to be.
Tank, actual 1 fish tank, 1 storage bin with stray stuff, and 1 Reef that I neglect and I won’t count the extra tanks that are empty waiting for me to get off my dead donkey and set them up.

Take the vacations to reefs and deal with the aftermath upon your return.

I have two. A pico and my 20g. We travel quite a bit throughout the year so when I go out of town I do the following: have someone come and look at my tank every couple of days, prepare an extra bucket of ro water to be swapped out half way during the trip, have a camera on the tank just in case something goes wrong, dose extra the day leading up to us leaving that way if nutrients drop a little it will be fine.

I have two tanks with a fairly good amounts of automation. I’m still troubled with vacations.

Last year we left for a week - first vacation since getting back into the hobby - and had a neighbor feed frozen food daily. Everything else was completely automated so they didn’t have to do anything. I’m happy to say no issues arose.

BUT. The day after I returned an ATO sensor failed. It it failed while on vacation my neighbors would not have known what to do. I need a better backup plan…

I have two: 70g AIO and 30g frag tank. I have a fair bit of automation, I need to feed daily and then weekly maintenance. My wife feeds when I'm away for work and we have a neighbor friend that feeds when we're away as a family.

If I were on my own and had some disposable income I would not hesitate to have one of the LFS near me come feed and check tanks while away.

I don't know how many tanks is too many. Two are enough for me, although I wish they were both a bit bigger, LOL. Sounds like you are enjoying yours and I think that's great. If you're having fun, you don't have too many (yet).

I travel a lot and that's how I work it.

The tank happily runs unattended (we've done a 6 week trip with the tank running itself with no problems), but in the event it sends an alarm, my local LFS have a key to the house and know they can do whatever necessary to fix any major problems.

I have an 800, 700, 140 & 40. All have auto top off’s, auto feeders and back up battery pumps. While on vaca, I have someone come by and check on them daily and perform any maintenance needed as well as them feed them some frozen mydis and nori. That’s it.

I have 5 tanks setup, 60, 75, 100, 200 and 240.! Four of them have Apex systems on them so there is some automation but feeding is done by family and friends when I vacation. I have a “How to feed” video that I send out. If I am gone longer than a week I include a video on how to top off the various ATOs.
