If I get a Gyre style pump rated for 135 gallons. Do I need one or two?

Depends on how much “stuff” you have in the tank that will impede flow. If you’ve got a lot of rock work, you may need two. If rock work is minimal, one may be fine.

I’m assuming no coral with the puffer, so tons of flow isn’t going to be critical.

Correct. This is the current setup. I’m thinking one on the opposite side of the return?

Start with one. as your tank fills up, you could consider adding another.

I have a 47 inch tank with one jebao dcw-120 crossflow. lots of flow at 30%. I also have an ai nero 5 on the opposite end for now.

Definitely looks like one would be sufficient.
I think so too because I don’t want to create so much flow that I’m blowing Hewbie around. Puffers aren’t good swimmers as they are very slow and clumsy lol. And yes I’ve done that before it’s very entertaining to see but I felt bad and apologized to him at which point he learned to avoid swimming directly in front of the powerhead lol unless of course there’s a piece of food there.

Cool thing about gyres is you can fully adjust the speed to your needs.

I run 60% in fwd to get good cross flow. But only 20% in reverse, which directs the flow down the wall the gyre is on. Any more and it starts blowing sand around.
