I just got a call to go 80 miles away to investigate a 3 gallon gasoline overfill on the other side of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The sun set hours ago but the evaporation rate of gasoline will have removed all traces of the fuel spilled unless someone ignited it so I can find the impact area?

Saturday I went to the beach to investigate smuggling boats but they also evaporated before I arrived?

Tonight I was trying to sleep when dispatch rang with tonight’s nonsense that has me awake and wondering;

Do you know someone who works on call with their job?

I get calls anytime from 6 AM to 1 AM depends
That’s the long day of a business owner. I hope you are doing well and having fun on the way.

I’m going to try and get some sleep now but I fear that the night will be crazy. My mom used to say; “No rest for the wicked. “.

I am on call to respond to any freezer, fridge, or ambient temperature storage excursions. Any could cost hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in drugs and irreplaceable samples collected. Kudos to all those that work on call.
The CVS near me has lost their freezer a few times and I have always regretted getting there after they threw out the ice cream.

Work in enterprise IT, one of the most unrewarding industries to work in! On-call most of the time and some times I feel like the money just isn't enough when you living off constant broken sleep trying to function, then still expected to wake up in the morning and work a full shift in the day lol. Good times everyone needs you in this job, all hours including your family for tech stuff completely unrelated. Google is my best friend :face-with-tears-of-joy: :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

But hey, some ones got to do on-call and keep the world functioning after dark :face-with-hand-over-mouth:

Edit: lucky I can do my job remotely!

They only call when “It’s broken” and are annoyed and frustrated with their situation and you get to listen to them. I often have to see the client’s mess in person, remote work can provide helpful insulation when they call.
Your pics make me miss the Central Coast.
I want to move out but I think I would miss it too if we did.
I work in IT, and I've basically been on call since 1998 in one way or another. Thankfully over the last decade I don't get called much, but I'm still on call.
The technology has become more reliable but every now and again someone like me cause a blue screen system error just to keep you employed.:face-with-hand-over-mouth::face-with-tongue:
sys admin, on call 24/7. Nothing worse than getting a call at 2am for something so stupid from management that it could have waited during normal hours.
They were promoted because they couldn’t understand the difference, and they were not able to figure out how to make it work without 6-8 hours of head scratching. They think you’re going to need that much time also.
Technically I am always on call …..as a Operations Supervisor I could be called in at any moment to go to work and deal with the f uck ery that is happening
Trying to make employees work can be as challenging as trying to reboot a system except employees don’t have a power switch.

I was monthly on call at night, now it's every other week or so. Not a huge fan of the change, but at least now I get paid for it.
I’ve been answering pagers, flip phones emails and cell calls since the mid 90’s and if I didn’t get OT and a vehicle to drive I would be a Barista. Unpaid labor is an abomination, while working is just slightly better when there is compensation.
