Aside from the initial benefits of quicker clarity when placed into a tank, what's the advantage of rinsing the sand?
Anything decaying or organic won't cause as much of an ammonia spike. But for a new tank and initial ammonia spike is actually not a bad thing in the first day or 2 I suppose..

Also, the junk you rinse off won't necessarily settle out if you have the proper amount of flow - especially with sand sleeping or sand spitting wrasses.

I guess I hadn't considered that possibility. I've been on the fence on rinsing sand in an upcoming tank, but much of the information I've found has been regarding reusing sand between tank transfers.

This one I can understand, however I regularly stir my sand beds and I've found that within a few weeks the dust cloud significantly decreases.

So if you’re taking sand from one tank and putting it in another tank you definitely need to rinse and then rinse again and one last time with RO……

I didn’t rinse my sand for my new tank but I did run filter socks, filter pads, and filter floss till the water was clear…. It took a day or 2…… I used Original Grade Ocean Direct Live Reef Sand.

Nah, I rinsed some sand for my goby to have something to sift through while in a holding tank, but new one is brand new bags of Fiji pink.

Thanks for the tips!

My guess is that Special Grade just breaks up into dust as you mess with it.
Tracks. I've been rinsing again all afternoon. This stuff is just sludge. I can't believe they sell it. Lesson learned. CaribSea is now 100% on my blacklist. First strike was their trash "liferock". Not giving them a third.

It’s just special grade. Fiji pink is great. I never got the people who say it blows around as I have 80x and no issues

Agreed I have Fiji Pink and it's perfect texture and reasonably clean (cleaner than Bahamanian Oolite I accidentally used in one tank). Fiji pink had some fines but washing wasn't bad.

Goals for the week:

I'm only in the office one day this week (then off to Hawaii!!), so few To-Do's but big ones:
1. Pick up and acclimate new Carpenter's flasher wrasse and Exquisite Fairy Wrasse and add them to the 40!
2. Make saltwater
3. Prepare for vacation: train coworkers, make food, make RODI, make AFR

That's it! Maybe do some drilling if I get some time.
