Do I have to use the marine one or can I use the regular one?

I think the only difference is the marine is 1.25% active ingredient and the regular is 1%. I wanted to see if anyone here used the regular. I used the marine before and it was great but my LFS no longer carries it and just has the regular, along with petco etc.

I know I saw some people use the regular but that was years ago, so just wanted to confirm I can still use it before I do.

Also how long did you dip, how much, etc?

The regular one is fine. IIRC the marine one just had an anti foaming agent in it or something so the skimmer wouldn't freak out. If you are doing a dip though, why not use Bayer Insecticide instead? It works very well. Melafix, is so so IMO.

Thank you for the response. I cannot find bayer and when I have used it in the past my SPS did not respond too well to it and when I used melafix in the past (marine one) it easily knocked everything off and it is clear so you can see what you are taking off, etc

No worries, if that's your preferred dip then by all means go for it. I used to do 2 capfuls per gallon of water for SPS corals. Some did up to 4. Duration varies, about 5 mins should do it.

I just confirmed with API that you can use the regular for all marine, it is just not as strong.

I used to use bayer, my corals just did not come out as good after that then melafix and I like that I can see what is coming off.

A long time former coral seller friend of mine (Ken from the defunct Reef Corner) got me using his formula of using Pond Melafix at 10ml per gallon. Rather than mix up gallons of the stuff, I have 1 and 2 quart markings on my dipping containers and I add Melafix according to the amount of water with a syringe. For 2 quarts of coral water, I add 3ml of Melafix Pond plus 8 drops of CoralRX. I put in these little 12V 40GPH pumps to circulate the water and blow off dead and dizzy bugs and let everything do its work for 10 minutes. Then I rinse the corals in clean water and we're ready to go. You should see the bugs, slugs, worms, crabs and other misc. hitchhikers that end up in the bottom of the containers....yikes!

sorry to bump a pretty old thread, but are you still using this mix?

Melafix is the best dip I have used for average dipping. Others are better for more specific reasons but melafix is gentile and easy to see into the dip. Different types just have different strength.

Bayer also changed their ingredients up when they recently rebranded. Some say it is still ok, and others say not. I've not yet picked it back up since, waiting for the jury to agree on the matter.

FWIW, I run Melafix, Revive, and CoralRX alternating days through my QT and dip cycle. Everything goes through it, except fish and inverts. Deepwater acros to zoas. I do hope Bayer (Bioadvanced now) is still safe so I can add it back in.

How long is your QT cycle? Do you just progress from one dip to the other? If so, how long in between each dip?

Strange, Bayer tends to be the least harmful to SPS.
I’ve never had it affect SPS in the short term, though I did lose them after about 30days. But I don’t think it was the dip to be honest. I wasn’t testing much back then and am leaning more towards it being a water quality issue than anything else.

I do at least a 14-day, and that if everything looked clean throughout. If I see something, I'll adjust based on what. For example, flatworms of certain varieties (AEFW, EEFW, etc) get a mandatory 3-week minimum.

I dose every other day, alternating through the different dips.

Curious, is this with the older Bayer, or the newer BioAdvanced?

I will say that I ran SPS through old Bayer for many years, including treating a nasty AEFW outbreak many years ago with it when the corals were extra stressed. No long or short-term negatives I couldn't attribute to something else.
