Looking back on this thread, I never actually updated y’all on my DIY auto filter roller. It’s super basic currently, just a float sensor, that when triggered turns on a time controlled relay that rolls 1 second of new material into the flow through area. Over all it works… ok. As the used roll gets bigger, it takes more torque to rotate, and the motor is very small and cheap, so sometimes it will get stuck and cause the display to overflow. It takes about 3 weeks for this to happen.
Version 2 of the automated (or version 7 of the filters that I’ve built at this point ) will use a stronger motor, internet control, and sensor redundancy. I’ve built a working model, but don’t want to change it out before my above mentioned trip since I won’t have time to monitor it, and I don’t want to leave potential arduino troubleshooting to my friend/roommate who will be watching my tank.
