Just got this tang about two weeks ago. Things have mostly gone well. He is a bit of a picky eater starting out but he is eating. When I got home today I noticed a small black spot just below his top fin. I have seen black ick and this does not look like that to me. The fish is acting fine and my cleaner shrimp works on him regularly. Any thoughts on what this might be and if I should be concerned? Thanks for any input. Happy to answer questions I can.

That’s a pic with an orange filter if it helps.
This appears to be post injury and starting to heal. Also noted is the fish is slightly thin. Assure its getting proper diet. Some foods to feed are:

LRS herbivore diet
Formula 2 flake and frozen
TDO Pellets
small plankton
Hikari Marine cuisine
Ocean nutrition veggie diet
spirulina brine shrimp
mysis shrimp
Prime reef
Nori seaweed basted with garlic extract

Add selcon vitamins to foods occasionally

That added some food choices. Thanks so much. He is not eating like I would like. I will add a few more choices till he eats like the pig he should be.

I agree that this is likely from a minor injury. The spot is too large to be black spot disease (turbellarians). However, the tang is thin, so feed it small amounts of meaty seafoods, multiple times a day to try and bulk it up. Also, when a fish holds in front of a cleaner shrimp, that is pretty good evidence that it has some parasite - in this case, it could have flukes, you can't see those.

Also, not to be a "downer" but we've seen a rash of problems with blonde nasos lately, they just don't do as well as they used to, and not as hardy as the lituratus nasos are. Nobody knows why, but it is a pretty definite issue with them.

100% agree he needs to eat better. He is a new edition to the tank. Going to my LFS for some extra food options today. My cleaner shrimp jumps on everyone me included. Stick your hand in my tank and he will greet you. Thanks for all the advice. Anything in particular I should be watching for flukes?

Watch for flashing/scratching and fin flicking as a sign of possible flukes.

Fortunately he is currently doing none of that. He just patrols the glass looking at the pretty fish in the glass. Fingers crossed his appetite picks up with some new choices. Thanks for all the help.
