Pods life cycle?

So just curious... saw the pod population explode in the last few days, but haven't added any in over a months time. Will they cycle about every 4-6 weeks? Not sure what there life cycle is. All the dots are pods.

Yeah, This just happens from time to time, they will go away and might not come back for months or at all …
The species will change also …
Added: this happens even if you never ever add pods
