I got ich too from a frag. But ich isn't really a killer. Been a year almost since I have it and no fish deaths. I am more worry about the velvet and others that can wipe your tank.

I agree and disagree at the same time.

I agree that your tank and fish can survive.

I disagree because if you have an event that stresses the fish out (adding coral, another fish or even doing a re-design of rockwork), it can and most of the time will fire back up. Each time it fires back up, your fish are stressed and it attacks, and at these points when your fish's immune system are weakened it can kill.

I agree I wouldn't want it if I could keep it out but now that it's the it's harder to take every fish I have out and quarantine. I kill more fish trying to capture and treat than to let it be. I still quarantine new fish but mainly for velvet, Brook and uronema. I advocate quarantine but if it's got in somehow it's more stress to take them out and treat than to let them be.

So far only fish that showed signs were my Achilles hybrid and the sargassum trigger but I no longer see the spots. I know it's in there but all been doing great. I even added a few new fishes that's been quarantine since then and no signs of ich spots infection on them.

Didnt read through every post but I highly doubt it came from a dragonette. They rarely get ich as it is. Get an over sized UV with low flow going through it. After half my fish died from an outbreak I bought a 57watt uv for my 150gal tank. Any time I saw any spots i ran it and any time adding new fish. I now have an Achilles tang (who we all know is most susceptible to ich) and haven't run my UV since a few weeks after I got it. No signs of ich. It's about reducing numbers. Dont undersize a UV or it will do nothing

According to the chart I think I'm OK with a 40W. I have 120g of actual volume between my display and sump. Coincidentally we have a local reefer who posted one for sale yesterday. I'll be picking it up tomorrow and already have a new bulb being shipped for overnight delivery. At least I feel like I'm doing something.

And because having found ich on your purple tang isn't good enough to mess up your day, here's a dead chromis for a bonus. Found him at lunch. Not previously showing symptoms or signs of disease. Examined with a strong magnifying glass and did not see any signs of external parasites. This is the first fish I've ever lost out of my display tank.

Oh - and I have a stone crab I didn't know about that was munching on him. . . yay! :(

Sounds like you'll be good, good find on the UV 40 watt should be good just dont flow through it too fast. Glad to see you're going the UV route. I dont think you'll have problems with ich going forward once its hooked up. Like I said I run mine when I get new fish for a bit. Given Achilles are so prone I ran mine for a week straight then nights for a week and that's it and no signs so it clearly makes a huge difference. That and a healthy diet of multiple feedings a day. Good on you man

I agree with a UV sterilizer! My purple Tang had a few ich spots, no other fish ever had signs of it, but I have no other fish but the Tang and Wrasses. After putting the UV sterilizer in and feeding Mysis soaked in Selecon and Vitachem including the nori, all signs of ich were gone in about 3-4 days. Good luck and keep us posted! [emoji16]

Wow that takes time and patience. That's almost a year of QT.
Yup! Believe me, I remember. I wanted to quit so many times. I’m glad I stuck it out but I sure learned it the hard way! @HotRocks and @Humblefish kept me straight!

They rarely show obvious symptoms of ich because of their thick mucous coats (like wrasse) but both are fantastic “Typhoid Marys” because the parasite lives easily in the gills and out of sight and infects the tank with a vengeance.

The other problem is. . . even if it did get it outside the gills how in the world would you even SEE it on its body??

I have a question for those more knowledgable than I: This afternoon the defined white spots were gone, leaving behind a dusty white mark where they had been. Now I know the trophants drop off as part of the cycle, but this fish had no signs of ich last night, looked like my pictures this morning, and now they're all but gone? That's a bit fast, don't you think?

That could be fast, they’ll usually be present for a couple days. However, those photos look nearly unmistakably to be ich.

This. I have ich in my tank. I bought an oversized UV (40 watt) for my 100 gallon, soak all my food in selcon and garlic and feed alot of nori. I havent lost a fish since...

I dont use a QT and rarely have a problem. I have one fish (gold rimmed tang) that gets ich once a year and has for 9 years. I treat the DT and after three to six days all good again.

I think ich is a reality with tangs — it’s like w common cold for some of them especially ones like hippos and PBTs.

I say UV that thing and hopefully try to manage it give your travel schedule. When you get off your travel schedule you can regroup and consider going fallow.

A 40 watt uv on my 150 gal helped/is helping my fish survive ich.
Haven't seen any spots since installation. It's buying me time until I can properly TTM/QT.

What’s UV did you use? Also what flow rate?
