My name is Salman, I want to set up a saltwater tank using a sump. I know a good amount and was wondering if I am missing anything. I am going to add a hang on the back filter that creates agitation (Should be plenty oxygen), a heater, circulation pump to the sump, a skimmer. All this for a 40 gallon tank. Excluding salt water and rocks/sand/coral. Also, would 40 be too small if I want to raise a pair of clownfish. Also, any tips on breeding. I would like to get in on that. Also, any tips in general would be appreciated.
Hi there. I'm new to this saltwater world as well. Although I have years of experience in the freshwater aquarium hobby, I've learned a great deal on the marine side thanks to many people on these forums. I started with a 40 gal breeder and a external filter and now collecting parts for a DYI refugium/sump. Im going to post this build when the time comes to get input from the good people here. Please post with your progress as they can save you a lot of heartache. Best of luck to you!

40 gallons is more than enough and an excellent size for spawning Clownfish. I'm currently liquidating some of my Clownfish broodstock, including beautiful spawning pairs. If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to message me. I'm happy to help however I can!

Welcome! No need for an HOB filter if you are skimming in your sump. Will be plenty of O2 from the overflow and skimmer itself. 40g is perfect for a pair of clowns.

What’s your plan for corals?

Welcome to R2R. I would run powerheads instead of a HOB. If possible I would add filter socks to trap suspended detritus. Browse the classifieds here and on Facebook Marketplace for used equipment. My build was almost completely set up with used stuff. The only thing I would advise on buying new are heaters and return pumps. They are too important to risk on used that may or may not fail prematurely.
