Something on my Koi Tang. Its tail and dorsal fin had been looking ragged for a few weeks now although tail has grown back now. Then 3 days ago I see a white stripe on the tail. Today it is gone. I also see something similar on the fin of my Pakistan Butterfly. Any ideas or suggestions as what to do?

Tangs will get white streaks in their fins from pretty minor things like just bumping into rocks. This is just their natural color changing ability not working normally in that spot. I wouldn't worry much about them unless there are other symptoms.

Anyway given the state of the 'koi' tang I'd assume it's fighting with the yellow and this is an injury.

Butterfly shows fin damage or fin damage from aggression/tail strike from a tang or scrape which should heal on its own and tang shows skin irritation in which both are related to water quality. Assure your ammonia and nitrate are Not elevated and you are testing with quality test kits such as Hanna or salifert brand kits.
Tang shows light HLLE and assure its getting proper diet, again caused by water quality and inadequate diet. What foods are you feeding?

No ammonia,it’s a FOWLR tank and nitrates (49.8) phosphate (0.28) run high regardless of what I try to bring them down. I use Hanna checkers. Surprisingly no algae in the tank. Weekly 80 gallon auto water changes. Feeding LRS frozen, NewLifeSpectrum pellets and 2 sheets of nori daily

Thanks for the reply.
I have a Hawaiian longnose black tang, yellow tank and a hippo tang. I have not seen any aggressive or fighting among them. The Koi tang is bigger than the other tangs. It’s a 270 gallon tank 7ft long

Nitrates are getting to elevated stage and Phos is more than twice acceptable range. Some other foods to offer listed below. Assuming numbers are true, I suggest adding a pouch of Chemipure blue or even Elite and doing 2-3 gallon water changes daily for the next two weeks. This step should be under 10 minutes daily

Thanks for the info. I am adding a GFO reactor to my tank.
