Well, other than losing most of my corals that survived, Cyano is now coming back bigger and better. Honestly, I’d rather have Cyano over Dinos and such.

Ironically, my clams have thrived through all of this. And I used to read (and sometimes still do) that Clams are harder than SPS to keep. Yet both times I’ve had a mass die off of SPS (and in this case, some LPS too), my clams have always survived through it.

Seems like I took that FTS too soon as in actual fact, the only corals to have seemingly survived are the Acan and the Yumas (which we all know, my colonies of yuma thrive through everything).

Ive had a few people say this but its red and more like Cyano than it is dinos.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a microscope that I can use, but from what I’ve seen between Dinos and Cyano, Cyano is often a red and slimey whilst Dinos are stringy and brown.

Another non microscope test is to take a small amount of the brown material and put it in some tap water. And then put it in the freezer. Once it freezes and falls, if it puts obvious strong pink into the water, there's a bunch of cyano. If it puts no color, or slight copper color then it's more likely dinos.

I didn’t do this but I found a similar method when I was using a turkey baster to suck it off the rocks and it released a defined pinky/red colour;

I had a feeling it was dinos when I saw this:

That’s almost 100% dinos on that coral. I’ve seen this before.

Here’s some of the other bits;

Due to the blue lights, I have to use a filter of some sort to get actual photos and at night, it tends to die back so it’s hard to show the deep red colouring on this. I don’t doubt it’s not Dinos it’s just weird how it’s not all that stringy once it’s taken hold - if it’s weak, it tends to go stringy and lose grip easily.

Right. Freezing ruptures the cells and cyano contains a bunch of pink water-soluble pigment.

results are in - my read is “pink so likely cyano”, is that right?

For sure!
That pink means that there's a bunch of phycoerythrin (pink photosynthetic pigment that makes red cyano look red) in that nuisance stuff.

So yeah, confident there's a bunch of cyano.

I did a 50% water change last night to knock it back and turns out that it did work.
Here’s an FTS from this morning. The Cyano/Dinos is mainly back on the sand but time will tell if they are back on the rocks tonight.

I picked up 3 corals to see if the tank has done its main course of death. And of course, I may have an addiction to urchins so I had to get a new one that I’ve not had previously!

Midway through the week and…
They still look like this! No bleaching or anything, just 3 healthy looking corals (which I am surprised about as the ‘Favia’ is in more PAR than it needs).

Well, this isn’t too fun… My Deresa has been fairly retracted all day and gaping by the looks of it, hopefully I can recover him.

Due to the clan’s scenario, I wanted to double check it was Cyano and although it’s not dethawed yet it seems promising.
Also, I had no idea it could glow like that!

Well, unfortunately the deresa began to rot over night, luckily I caught it in time however this guy is now sat in a bucket waiting for me to get home in a few hours to deal with him.
I can’t figure out what it was that made him just begin to decompose however it was only in the last 1-2 weeks that he did begin to die off.
