let it be for a week. Just needs to break in. Be ready to dial it back when it starts skimming heavier.

Mine did the same until I put it in 6"s of water. After break in, I now have it at 7" and it does need adjustments to fine tune, but it consistently produces a very dark skimmate for months.

@jd371 how deep is your skimmer exactly and reading between 1-3 ? I tried everything , 2 months with noting . Then i raised the water level to 26cm , setting between 1 and 2 and now im getting yellow water with some foam but nothing like yours

Just to mention i have a 180l setup ...
My water level is at 1o" and I have it set at just above the 1 mark. The reason the skimate is so dark is because at the time I was feeding algae or veggie tabs (can't remember what they were called), the fish didn't like them so I stopped.

Now at 2 , at 3 its foaming but then nothing gets into the cup , phos 16ppm and nitrate 20ppm. I cleaned the camber for live rock and then started skimming within 5min as follows , friend of mine says he think maybe the water might be to clean to get that gunk.

Mine too awhile to break in as well. I did raise it up 1-2 inches with some egg crate. After raising it I was getting very light water skim and I just left it along and cleaned out the light skim weekly. However this week I noticed very dark skim. Still very watery but there is some thicker skim around the inner cup rings. I'm going to leave it alone to see if it gets better or maybe it's my tank nutrients being too clean.
