I like to have a clear idea of the longevity of Centropyge angels in captivity. If all Centropyge owners paticipates we can easily get an accurate answer to this question. Please help by answer the following questions:

1. What species of Centropyge?
2. What was/is the longest time you had/have your oldest/longest Centropyge angel?
3. Is he still alive?
4. If he passed, what happen? or best guess at the cause.

My answers:
1. Centropyge loricula, the Flame Angel
2. 5 years
3. No
4. Killed in tank crash from Hurricane Harvey

I had a Flame Angel last about 5 years.
Not sure why he died. Found the body one morning in a corner.
I suspected a black sponge that I saw growing.
I had a Coral Beauty for 8-9 years.
I noticed the body was getting fatter over time.
It was eating normally and acting as usual, then one day, maybe 3-4 years after the Flame died, the Coral Beauty died.
My current Flame has been with me for 3 years.

1. Potters angel
2. 1 year
3. No sadly
4. Ich assumed

1. African pygmy fireball angel
2. 1 year
3. NO
4. Unknown probably due to bad diet, as i was young and couldnt reach tank top so my mum cared for the fish and only got fed once a day of probably brineshrimp

Does this involve paracentropyge too?

My answers:
1. Centropyge bispinosa, Coral Beauty (also known as Twospined or Dusky Angelfish)
2. 5 years
3. Yes
4. Not applicable

Great fish. Eats zoas like skittles though. A bit cryptic but makes it more of a treat when I see him/her. Eats pretty well frozen foods and will pick at the nori I feed the tangs. Also see it scavenging the rocks for stuff although I'm not sure what.

From the long and pointed dorsal and anal fins, your fish is a well mature male. 10 years. Thanks

In general, smaller size mean shorter lifespan. Not always hold true. A lot of the parrots (bird) are not too big but many live over 50 years, about as long as a Elephant. Preliminary, from my search, smaller angels seem to have shorter lifespan than the larger ones, at least in the wild. This may or may not hold true in captivity.

For C. argi a site says maximum of 5 years in captivity (Animal World). I haven’t been able to find any consistent figures on the lifespans of smaller angels though for the medium to larger Centropyge dwarf angels (Coral Beauty, Flame, I’d assume the same for the rest) 10+ years seems to be quite common from what I’ve read here. HumbleFish told me he’s kept a Flame for 15 years, not sure if it’s still alive.

This is unrelated but clownfish and damselfish live abnormally long considering they aren’t big for the most part (3”-5”). I would not consider 10-15 years impressive for a clown or maybe even a damsel.

Since my tank will be 4’ this just gives me more of a reason to go for a 4” dwarf angel.
