African flame back. 1 year and 2 months, so far. LFS had him for about a month before I bought him. No idea how old he is, and the LFS didn’t know either. I’m hoping to have him for a minimum of 5+ Years.

Maybe 1.5 inches? He/she is pretty small. By far my favorite fish in the tank. I’ll send out a shot when I take my lunch break today.

No doubt, I guess 5 isn’t optimistic enough! I’ve only had my tank for about 1 year, so that seemed like such a long time...but true, I’d love to try to set some kind of record.

Cherub Pygmy Angel
3 years and counting
In great shape and very healthy

I like to have a clear idea of the longevity of Centropyge angels in captivity. If all Centropyge owners paticipates we can easily get an accurate answer to this question. Please help by answer the following questions:

1. What species of Centropyge?
2. What was/is the longest time you had/have your oldest/longest Centropyge angel?
3. Is he still alive?
4. If he passed, what happen? or best guess at the cause.

My answers:
1. Centropyge loricula, the Flame Angel
2. 5 years
3. No
4. Killed in tank crash from Hurricane Harvey

I’ve had a loricula live for about 7 years. Non-dwarf Pygoplites: nearly 17 years but died of a terrible accident which also killed my 4 year old pair of Centropyge colini. Now trying my luck on a new Pygoplites and a Centropyge interrupta. Both a few months now.

My African flame back has been with me 5 years ago who knows how old before since he has never grown.
20200410_091408.jpg

Beautiful. How big is he? That huge spike indicated that he is old and is a male.
I change my mind with a little more experience. That is a female African Flameback. Right now I have knowledge about at least 2 Flameback who are by themselves, meaning no other Flameback, and stay female for 2+years. My largest Flameback turn male in weeks when he is with two other Flameback in a 65 gal tank.
It seem that for Flameback at least, the singleton will remain as female. Sex change is stimulated by having stimulation from other Flameback, rather than Sex change is suppressed by having dominant fish around.

I did not have any problem with adding two to the one existing in my 65 gal. I also have a Tomini tang in this tang.
the largest turn male in 2-3 weeks. The resident Angel was the mid size one. She and the smallest one stay as females
