Hello,
So I have been researching and trying to figure this out. I have a bloom of some sort of algae or Cyano.

It currently is fish less for the last 2 weeks, due to recently ich, fish are in quarantine tank.

Recent tests from Red Sea test are : Ammonia 0, PH 8.4, Nitrate 10, Phosphate.25-.5, Calcium 440, MG 1410, Alk 8.15 and Salinity is 1.025.

This has been going on for a couple of weeks. At first it had more of a red color to it and it was thicker and slime like texture. But now it seems to be more of a brown color.

My zoas have been mad and closed up for a week.

I recently increased flow.

Other corals such as frogspawn, hammers, Ricardo’s mushroom are mad and closed.

Xenia group split and have seemed to die now.

It doesn’t seem to have the bubbly snot characteristics I’ve read about. It grows on the glass, rocks, and sand.

Talking with another reefer he was convinced it was Cyano.

Yesterday I decided to try chemi-clean. It has been 24 hours just awaiting the 48 hour period and hopes that this helps.

I’ll attach some photos and can add more.

Sorry for long post. Any help appreciated.

Any recommendations for getting nutrients out of the sand?

Your nitrates are still 10 after being fish less for two weeks, the live rock should have got rid of them IMO, so the nutrients are coming from some where.

As you are fish less might be worth stirring up the sand bed and syphon out the rubbish in the water column, your corals might not like it.

Also how long has the tank been setup?

Add daily at lights out : 1ml of hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons for a week and leave lights on dim during this week period. Do not use NoPox and do not feed coral while doing this treatment

I'm not saying what you have is dinos, but it looks EXACTLY like the dinos I had. Get a cheap 100x/400x/1200x microscope from amazon and have a look and you'll easily be able to verify.

Here's mine (this is through my little girl's toy microscope! it cost £14):

And here's what they looked like in the tank:

I have thought about getting a microscope to verify.

Do Dino’s always have the bubbles in it? I haven’t seen any bubbles

So your tank is going through the normal process. My tank is 3 months old the Cyano is almost gone and it went from red to brown and had some air bubbles in it's wasn't as bad as yours. I now have a small amount of diatoms which is slowly going, but I have gone through them same as you it's normal it's all about the beneficial bacteria getting established, it takes time.

What size is you tank and what fish have you got in it?

Currently fishless and it’s a 55 gallon.

I wouldn’t care so much but my corals look are closed up, don’t look happy and I don’t want to lose them

Thanks for everyone’s input this far. These last few weeks have been discouraging with ick/velvet and now this. I don’t want to lose any coral.

I have gotten a microscope and will post some pics/videos tomorrow

Would algae in the system cause corals not to open? What causes corals not to open for a week and seem upset if nothing has changed?

I will double check that. Would that make all the corals close up?
