Hey @Nor'easter reefer I'm never going to say anyone is doing anything wrong because I don't do most things "correctly". What I'm trying to say is be careful letting anyone tell you how to run your tank. BRS has a lot of great information but just because it works for my tank doesn't mean it will work for yours.

No no no. I'm saying you weren't necessarily doing anything wrong. What works for me kills a lot of other people's tanks.

My water quality here is high in alkalinity and calcium but doesn't have a ton of harmful to fish stuff in it. Now that I'm using RO, I have to dose calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity.

My corals soak up phosphates and nitrates so I'm dosing both of those as well.
I'm just really hoping that this tank, I can keep more than a pair of clownfish.. I got 2 new fish, a yellow watchman goby and a bicolor blenny and the goby and blenny didn't make it.. the blenny was terrified and hid in the rocks and would only come out to eat if you weren't around. I assume he was wild caught. The yellow watchman did eat some but I think I need more diversity in my sand so it can eat throughout the day as well? That's my best geuss. Neither exhibited disease symptoms. Although the blenny could still be in there for all i know as i never found him but it's been like 4 months since I last saw him. I think a lot has to do with how sterile my tank it. I have seeded it with pods and do have a reproducing population

Same. Not saying it's right but I have never QTed anything. Also, Paul B doesn't QT. He says that QTing takes away your DT fish's ability to fight off disease when disease shows up, because it will show up. Naturally stronger immunities are better than chemicals in the tank, stressing fish to move them for treatment, etc.
I'm in the same club. no QT.

@Nor'easter reefer
Me too, what Tim said.
I do my tank the same way I did in 1990.
It works for me.
I usually never mention how I reef because I'm not very good when people get aggressive with me about things.
I've been told my way is wrong a million times.

I was being somewhat of a wise guy. I get every tanks different and it would be a massive chemical analysis to even begin to comprehend why and how everything works the way it does, im just not sure what went wrong last time and my 2 fish I lost this time got me mildly paranoid :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Scum and all you say? Hmm too bad i thought of this after doing a rather large water change yesterday :grinning-face-with-sweat:
I'd change a bit more. you still need to cycle the QT tank so old tank water that already has bacteria in it would benefit. even dropping in a rock from the tank or some of the media.

I feed my trigger garden worms in the summer, scrambled eggs once a week and various types of bugs too.
I don't really think about it.
I stick my hands in my tank regularly and I cook for a living.

I’m sorry … did you say you feed scrambled eggs to your fish tank?

I didnt have any support with my first tank. I had a buddy who was the king of cheap and thought i could grow coral because I got Kenya tree to grow with a 60$ petco led strip light (a petco led strip light from 8-10 years ago mind you, so it SUCKED) I'm glad I found R2R this time! I only wish I got more involved sooner!

FWIW - I don’t QT, never saw the need as I get my fish from my LFS. They receive and hold in a light copper solution, they do a pretty good job of not taking in a fish that has signs of diseases. Gambling, sure, but I’ve killed more corals by being an idiot than I have fish. (Don’t ask me about RHF ammonia dosing idea…. I killed my whole tank on that expedition )

Any coral frags I get are from reputable vendors and I have never seen any pests come in, does not mean it can’t/wont happen, my own experience tells me to be wary who you buy from. Reputation matters to most and they do a pretty good job of screening for bugs.

I want to turn a part of ny basement into my "fish lab" but I have a slate pool table i need to get rid of first... and it's fairly, moderately, incredibly heavy :grinning-face-with-sweat: once that's out... game on! Lol

Mine are all in my living room with the exception of the one I have at work.

Yes.
Trigger loves them.
Also feed green peas as well.
He'll also eat the entire clam, shell and all.
Helps file his teeth down.
I had a Koran angel a long time ago that would only eat cyno and cooked broccoli.
Go figure....

Now I wonder if I don't just dip the corals and add them to my display! Lol

I'm currently dosing Ammonium Chloride. 5 mL every couple of days.

Don’t do what I did and mix up a batch with my two kids “playing” in the basement, then forget what I was doing and accidentally 10x the recipe……. Didn’t take long for everything that swam to be belly up. That was an expensive morning.

I can’t even get my kids to eat eggs and here you are feeding them to your fish.
