I just read up on this method. Looks like a fun project.

Thank you for the share, that’s one of my projects.

This was my first diagram from the working prototype 8 years ago wend I first started developing and looking at the benefits of a continuous culture vs a standard culture. I’ve just recently started a new thread on the new version a lot has improved since then one of the main aspects for the success of a phytoplankton culture comes down to fertilizer as I’ve moved from the popular brands from experimentation.
It works best connected to a rotifer continuous culture imo as it feeds all corals

Below it’s a picture of a fat montipora Digitata fed with this system. Photosynthetic corals do get most of their energy from Zooxanthellae although they are natural predators and won’t say no to food in the water column.

Will be building the new upgraded version here https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/k...n-and-rotifers-culture.1075663/#post-12909841

oh, I thought the new version was just for rotifers. Doing Phyto also?

This was my FW experiment before moving to salt in preparation for commercially breeding clowns. No matter what I did I struggled to keep the single cell algae alive without adding fish to provide co2 and waste. Eventually it would turn yellow. Might have been from contamination but fact I could keep going when fish present and heavily fed led to me conclude co2 and waste were the limiting factors. No trace or other minerals added.

Here’s my solution. Oscars fed 8 to times daily max they’d consume. No filtration other than what the single cell algae and small clump of plants provide plus power head pointed up to provide aeration lights out.

The phytoplankton will feed the rotifers, keeping both cultures running indefinitely. It’s a copy of the 2 lower trophic levels in nature.

Fertilizer was added in the form of Miracle Grow to the non fishless tanks to get the culture started as well as maintained. Fish system fertilized itself. Next time I'll use f2 and see how that goes as I'd like to have an exterior culture going for feeding corals as well as cultivating pods.

Not a fan of f2 as they never clarify the ingredients, if seller using standard Guillard’s formula the copper and silica concentration will be thought the roof. The silica will only be good if someone growing diatoms.

F2 formula out there. One can easily create their own and adjust as needed. Although no clue how much better it is to miracle grow being plants are plants
