Your tank is so gorgeous. It’s also such a phenomenal looking bare bottom setup.
Thanks for the kind compliments. I’ve found it very challenging going BB the first year. So far, I have zero cyano but can’t keep SPS yet. Hope to get some going in a few months.

Good luck with your build as well.

You’re very welcome and thank you as well.

I can only imagine! I bet sps are coming real soon. You will sure be able to crank up the flow in your setup! I’m going to try some new things in my new build too. It’s fun to take on some new challenges.

I don’t think it’s the flow or light - got plenty of both. I believe it’s just TIME. Ok, I actually don’t know but I already have plenty of coralline algae, no pesky algae, stable alk, etc.

That said, I’ll put some SPS frags this week to see. The encrusted ones usually do well — I did fresh cut ones last time.

Why not add them now? Is the tank not stable?

Simple — it’s too cold and I don’t want to dip my arm in the water! lol

Latest video as of last night

Looking great man, spoiled here on the west coast I see. I really love those frag holders. Incredibly convenient for sps to move around to see where they are most happy.

Frag tank mystery solved! For the life of me, I could not grow zoas in the frag tank. I bought some nice zoas colonies — they all shriveled up and died in a week. Initially thought that water chemistry was amiss but all other things were growing well. Anyway, I moved a zoas colony to the SPS tank — it opened up nicely BUT I forgot that the Hippo Tang loves zoas! She ate a $50 dinner plate. :(

Back to the frag tank — I bought more zoas but this time, I got lucky and caught the bandit. It turns out that the Kleine Butterfly was nipping and eating them!$&@ Well, he’s now in the sump, to be rehomed to the 450gal, after he decimates all the aiptasias down there.

Took a trip to Home Depot and got 3 melamine boards made. Finally, I can be lazy and hide more junk! j/k I need to build a control board when I’m bored, which should be soon…

See before and after shots.

Currently, I have 2 x OR3 UV/Violet in the back and they provide a decent night-time pop. However, I’m missing the front of the tank. So…instead of buying more “high-end” corals, I’m thinking of getting cheap corals but add 2 x OR4 UV/Violet for more pop? :)

Your thoughts?

Scored a very nice Blue Face Koi Tang last night! He’s still not eating yet but hopefully soon. He’ll spend a month here in the frag tank before moving to the 450gal — I’m a little concerned with 2 large Haddonis there.

Vodka dosing is awesome! I’m currently at 22mL/day and Nitrate is only at 21, even with all the fish and heavy feeding.

Phosphate is high at 0.9 (likely due to 5 sheets of nori/day) so been dosing PhosphateRx to bring down.
