Get Serious about Reefing with Ryan Batcheller’s New Channel, Serious Reefs!

BRS, Ecotech and Neptune were all purchased (atleast a large portion of them) by the same venture capital group. From the comments that I have seen Ryan make, he didn't want to sell, his non-reefing partner did, and he didn't have the assets to buy his partners half, so he had to sell. I think he would have stayed there till he retired, happily making videos.

I imagine he had a pretty nice exit, but I doubt it was the kind of money where you can buy a studio, employ several people and produce quality content every week as a hobby...He either has to charge a subscription, advertise products or not do it at all. People pay for content all the time, and it is true that all the information is out there, but it is surrounded by a bunch of wrong useless information on the forums and social media. $10 a month to distill it down is cheap.

They will be successful I imagine. Do concise videos on different subjects, regular livestreams with experts so members can get their questions answered. There really isn't anyone out there at their level doing that stuff.

The majority of vocal forum participants may not be the demographic for Serious Reefs. That leaves 95% or more reefers in the Serious Reefs demographic. People are utterly clueless how few reefers are active and vocal on the forums or groups. Whether you/we think it, we are the very small majority in this community.

I have had quite a few people close to me that are new or don't even have a tank say they can't wait to get all the information in one spot and not have to wade through all the BS on the forums and groups. You can hate Ryan for any reason you feel, but to say he doesn't have the knowldege to run a reef tank is purely false. It may not be the way YOU want to run a tank but that doesn't make it wrong. If YOUR knowledge is better, start a channel and share that info.

Again, many on here vastly underestimate how people want and are getting their info these days. Spending hundreds of hours wading through all the crap on forums is hardly happening these days. $120 a year is one fish. If you save one fish, the $120 was worth it. If you save 15 fish and a tank full of coral, that $120 is beyond cheap insurance. Many of us forget what it was like being brand new to this hobby especially if you have been doing it a while. It was a mess on the forums 20 years ago. It is FAR worse today.

Hundreds of thousands a month visit, millions of pages are accessed each month and tens of thousands of registered members log on. There is no other reefing platform with the analytics we have here. And I take slight offense to the subtle jabs at the community here in order to elevate someone else. We are a community here and it’s not a bunch of BS. It’s an engaged and active continual conversation about reefing.

Now I don’t think you were trying to offend but please think about your verbiage before you take up for Ryan. Ryan is a good friend of mine and I wish him the best in his endeavors but we also have endeavors here and to be honest I’m pretty dang excited about our future here!

“Active and VOCAL” I spelled that out. It wasn’t an attack on you or R2R in any way.

It’s all opinion whether a lot of info is “good” or “bad” info. There is no doubt that forums, FB groups, IG pages, etc are loaded with bad info these days. See the recent AI thread for a prime example.

I can’t find one thread here (or any other group, forum, page, etc.) I could send someone brand new and feel confident they could setup a tank and be successful. That is not a jab in any way. Just my feelings on the subject

I wouldn't put down an entire group of people because they haven't been made aware yet. In my circle, it's very well known.

I support Ryan. I support R2R. I support multiple other sites of which I've been a member/participant for many years.

I don’t think he was trying to put down an entire group of people. There were a few people in this thread that were attacking him, saying because Ryan’s linkin page said he was employed at aperture that rtparty was lying and didn’t know what he was talking about when he stated Ryan left aperture. Maybe those posts got reported and removed, but I remember seeing them as I followed along here from the beginning.
