Hey everyone! I have been a long-time lurker on reef2reef, but I have yet to post anything! My name is Dawson and I have been a part of the hobby for give or take 2 years! I currently have been running my evo 13.5 throughout this time! It is a fully mixed reef with a few acros, heavy lps, and a few zoas.
I do have one interesting question though. I have recently ordered a new Reef Casa Vila 24 AIO (display is 24) and I have begun ordering a bunch of new gear for the tank! I want to transfer all my corals + pair of clowns over eventually; however, I want to do it right! I have chosen to go with new sand (fiji pink) and I do have a bunch of new dry rock for the tank. I have 2 bags of murine pure gems in my evo that I was planning on moving over to the new tank to seed the cycle and hopefully lessen the uglies. I realize live rock from the evo may help as well, but the issue is I have a bit of a turf algae + bubble algae issue. Although the bubble algae isn't bad by any means at the moment ( less than 20 bubbles visible ) but they are on a rock that isn't removable without removing the whole scape. The turf algae is the issue and is on most rocks that have visible light.
My thought process was to move the marine pure gems + 2-3 small rocks that have received zero light (base rocks) and thus have no algae on them; however, if there is still a chance with spores and whatnot, is there any other options? I have recently added a fuge onto the evo, and the nutrients are starting to go slowly, so I could do a big water change on the day of the set up and add some of that water to the new tank? I just don't want to carry my nutrient issue over to the new tank. Obviously with this new tank and having so much more room I do plan to add a skimmer, so I guess I could start that day one to deal with the higher nutrients from the evo water.
Regardless, just looking for others' opinions on the matter, and I will be doing a full build thread on my new tank soon!
