I have a 15 gallon nano cube. Woke up to my fish gasping for air, water parameters perfect. I agitated the water more by pointing the flow nozzle towards the top. Once I did this, the fish instantly got better. What’s a long term solution? Do I need a power head? Wave maker? Where do I put it in the aquarium? Won’t this do exactly the same thing as moving the nozzle?

I think you should have your return jets pointed upward so they are agitating the water surface for good gas exchange. You saw first hand how much this helps your fish.

Then, if you’re going to keep corals you’ll likely need more flow, and for that you could add some kind of wave maker or power head. Many put them on the side(s) of the tank and aim them so they are causing chaotic, turbulent flow over the corals.

Last, I my AIO’s I try to run the water level in the back so that the water gently cascades down each baffle in the filter section. This will also add to gas exchange, and it prevents any nasty protein slicks on the surface when the water level in the filter section is too high.

Depending on what you want to keep you may have already answered your question.

My returns create quite a bit of surface agitation.

I like the idea of cascading water as well, that definitely helps.

Is there any solution besides an air stone? I just don’t like the way they look.

Surface agitation plus a skimmer. . . Maybe a refugium on opposing light cycle.

I read an interesting thread on here about dissolved oxygen where it was suggested that the micro bubbles from a skimmer was one of the better methods for raising oxygen levels, but it's more complicated than that. . . Trying to find the thread. . .

I would add 1 or 2 powerheads, my own 15 gallon has 2 sicce voyager nano's, both pointed up at the surface for heavy surface agitation. No skimmer on my 15 gallon.
