Bump...there are several on here who actively grow phyto at home, so hopefully they see this post and respond where they get their starter cultures. Have you checked out Algae Barn? Not sure if they have it or not, though.

I just looked at that rlutah.com site someone recommended previously. They have many single strand starter cultures available.

Florida aqua farms has some varieties as culture disks. I've had a good experience using Carolina (general biological supply) and Algae Research Supply. Not sure if some combination has all the species you're looking for, but in my experience, unless you want only a few of the most common ones, getting them all from one source is tough or expensive.

Reef legends. Skyler is awesome to work with. I started with two easy cultures per his recommendation, tetra and chlorella. Been going for about two months now and I harvest every 7-8 days depending.

I love floridareeflabs on ebay! Great dense cultures. I got algae barn the 4 species one and it was super light and I am trying to culture that one rn. So far it a lot weaker than the one I get from Florida.reef.labs.

Their culture took off real quick, gets super green fast! Algae Barn's kinda seem like it was barely alive. Hope this helps!

Hi there,
It looks like others have left some good suggestions. However, I wanted to be sure you knew that our live phytoplankton is actually a blend of four different species of phytoplankton (Nanno, Iso, Tetra, and Thal) and is not meant to be used in starting a culture due to the four species out-competing each other for a food source.

As others have said, Carolina (general biological supply) and Algae Research Supply are both good, as is Mercer of Montana (Mercerofmontana.com), which actually sells kits and starter cultures.

We hope this helps you, and if you need any additional assistance, we are more than happy to help where we can!

Hi there,

We saw you comment something similar on another thread and want to help if there is an issue with our product. However, we cannot find anything in our systems using your handle. If you would kindly contact our team in a DM or through [email protected], we would love to help!

We also do not recommend using our blend of phytoplankton to begin a culture as it contains four species in one bottle. The color can vary based on the density of the species in the bottles; this does not affect the overall turbidity of the phytoplankton. But again, if you have any concerns about the phytoplankton that you ordered from us, we would be more than happy to help!

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

@Eldredge is great, pm for any questions.
Phyto does best with a good amount of starter culture, in general.
10 to 20% gives good results.
